Yesterday I had the opportunity to play a former member of the Chinese National Team. He's over here visiting his son, who's in college and was looking for someone to hit with. He heard, "Tommy Zai plays." Apparently, he was having trouble finding someone in this area to play with. I'm very happy he found me. You know how this sport is . . . not much fun playing someone way below your level, so that was what I was worried about . . . him feeling like it was a waste of his time. He wants to hit again next Sunday so I guess I wasn't a total waste. Luckily for me he mostly flat hit . . . I'm pretty good at power+angle blocking and playing fast. He also did a lot of lobbing and letting me smash away. That was a blast . . . literally. Don't ask how I did when he practiced his serves!
I just wanted to share this and ask if anyone else has had this kind of opportunity and what it was like.

I have a chance to see Chen Longcan playing against couple 2000 Ranking player in my club. I just felt bad for them since they were very frustraded. Chen Longcan just blocked and pushed (without even attacking). He played very relaxing, but others could not handle it.

I guess that it is not fun for me to be in that situation.Wink

I had played against people from about 4th or 5th hundred of the world rankings. Didn't fare well, naturally, but... Not a lot of practice with them, that was at the tournaments.

years ago, when i got started in tt - i used to train in the same club with members of the nigerian national team (some ranked in the top 200).  we'd play 11 point games back when games were to 21 points. i remember getting a point or two it was usually a shut out - but it was awesome experience and fun, for me at least.

I ran into Li Moding (rating = 2748) who is the best player in the Danish league atm (a Danish club just bought him from China) at an open tournament 2-3 weeks ago. He's beaten Finn Tugwell+Allan Bentsen both 3-0 a month or two ago (they are Danish national team players, world ranking between 60-80 I think). He has not played against Maze yet though.

Obviously he was waaay better than me, but he turned out to be a nice guy, so he gave me a chance to play some of my game instead of owning me with his serves+short game. I ended up grabbing a set which was quite a fun experience even though I am fully aware that he was only giving like 50% :P

i have a buddy who played waldner ....yes the legend !

my buddy got the first 3 points of the game .....but then ....no more. waldner just destroyed him 11-4 , 11-2 , 11-3 and so on, never got past 3 again.

he told me that waldner has so much control and spin , his wrist is like magic! and serves are just to good

p.s. my buddys rating is close to 3000

Ive played Swedish junior Mattias Karlsson a few months ago, i had setpoint in one set. He was better than me in the short game, and i had some troubles with his short pimples(on the forehand) But in the open game i was decent.

A few years ago i ran into Roger Lagerfeldt(national team like early 80s) I hade no chance.

You might have already done this, if not, this will help.

In a situation like this, I would take advantage of his knowldge of the game. I will just ask him whether he can coach me or teach some new skills and pay him - for an hour or two.

When you go to events like US National or US Open, you will get opportunities to play against pros. You have to sign up for high rated events.

I have hit with quite a few pros but in competitive matches the best I have played were Ding Yi (CH & AUT) and Xu Zhengai (CH) both in exhibition matches for Jamaica vs China.
I remember being very self conscious about not being humiliated as I  knew there was the real possibility of a zero game in front of an audience. I felt more like a spectator than a player, it was really surreal and quite intimidating I ended up being in a hurry to lose quickly and being careful not to 'cho' or make them beat me up any worse.
I remember playing some great points and still seeing my best shots hit past me, especially against Ding Yi.
I spent the whole match trying to find his backhand and on the few occasions I did, I picked up a backhand smash.
I also played Aron Li former chinese squad player in the commonwealth games 2002 playing for New Zealand.
I felt that Li was moving to hit my serves even before I served the ball! He seemed to be reading my mind while I was playing him.
I think I played the best rally of my life in this match (I saw the tape) and I still lost the point!
Playing the chinese is really discouraging to me, but after the match , you feel supefast for your next opponent.

I played a match immediately after hitting for an hour with the ex-pro. I honestly felt that my level had jumped 100 points from that hour and I easily won games I would normally struggle with. I can only imagine how much I'll improve after hitting for a month with Hookshot, who may not be a pro, but he's knows how to play and coach and happens to be a fellow Seemiller players. Yet, I'll keep the Chinese pro around so me and Hook can blast away and be blasted on!!!

I played a couple of quite good players.

Lagerfeldt for instance is amember of my club and I played him a couple of years ago.

I have also played against Henzell when he was playing in Sweden, I really tricked with serve that I never will let him forget.

But the best player i have played is Mikael "pplet" Appelgren. I played him in the Stockholms districts championships in the team event. He won easily with 3-0.

Never played Waldner but I have had the opportunity to be practising at the same time as him. What a privilege!

I get a chance to play one heck of an ex-pro every couple times a month, he's one of my fellow club members.   He won the world championships in, I guess, the late 30's early 40's.  His name is George Hendry and he's now 88 years old.

I'm guessing he used to play offensively, but now, because of his age he does almost all blocking and awsome placement.  Alot of the higher rated players at my club still can't get the ball by him.  He's a living legend in my eyes.

I played with Jiang Jialiang. His footwork is shot, but his forehand is still a rocket. He mostly blocks now, until he gets a weak ball to put away.

i played waldner at an exhibition 6 yrs. ago.

they were picking people from the audience to play him in a game to 5 pts. and i was one of the lucky ones.  he beat me 5-3.

the only reason i got those 3 pts. was cuz his ball was soooo spinny that i kept hitting it into the net and then it would roll over, cuz the net was way too loose.

I also played him at an exibition a couple of years ago. I played a game to 11 points. I lost 12-10  or 13-11, I don't remember. I even had a set point, which was pretty cool. Obviously he could beat me 11-0 if he wanted to, but he mostly lobbed balls for me to smash, which wasn't easy beacuse of the variety of spin he put. He even hit the edges of the table 2 or 3 times, which means he can put the ball very close to the line with little margin of error. He did a couple of nice serves, one loop which passed like a rocket, and thats was it.

I played and trained with a lot of high level players including ex-chinese national team members, but nothing compared to Waldner obviously.

I played Thomas Keinath at the Killerspin Spinvitational in Chicago.  They have a 41 point handicap event that they throw a few pros into and i got lucky enough to get him early in the draw.

I was ~1100 USATT rating at the time and they spotted me 35 points in a game to 41.  I lost 39-41  Tongue    His serves were destroying me and his loops were so well placed that i rarely touched them.

He was very nice and i got a couple pictures with him and he told me how bad my serves sucked and offered a bit of help.  Ever since this happened, the Spinvitational has always been one of my favorite events and i will continue to attend it and sign up for the 41 point handicap event.

Yeah! He's rated 1800 something now.  I send my fastest spinniest hardest loops at him and he's just like a wall.  He has such great feeling for the ball and the spin that's on it.  He can place any ball you send at him anywhere on the table, quite amazing.

He plays with a really old school hardbat, just in case your wondering.

No, but I did meet and shake the hand of Peter Karlson.

I think I'd be too nervous. I know I'd be too nervous.
The pressure of not wanting to be seen for the bum that I am would expose me surely and with no lingering doubt.

Come to think of it, I have some milder manifestation like this every time I come to the table.

I actually had a chance to play with four former national players of my country a couple of months ago, but I declined. I tagged along with a former national player to the place where he plays, and watched him and three other former national players play. They offered me to play, but I was rather intimidated by their awesome skills, as I know I am nowhere near their level...However, it was very enjoyable to see them playing up close.
