Hi all, First off - apologies if this sort of question gets asked all the time and my searching skills just failed me. I read some of the "classic vs modern rubbers" debate, which was v interesting but didn't quite answer my questions. (Also apologies for the lengthy ramble!) I'm starting to play pretty recreationally (once/2 weeks say) after 6-7 years off. I guess I was in the US2200-ish range before (playing 2-3 times/week in the UK); my muscle memory is pretty terrible so I'm guessing my recreational ceiling is somewhere in the 1800-2000 range (currently rocking 1600ish after 2 evenings of play). I used to play with Desto F1 on the fh, various slightly slower stuff on the bh (Vario, Coppa Tenero) with speed glue on an All+/Off- blade. Stylistically I have a very fast fh loop and a junky bh (almost all short pushes and blocks in competition, though I'd like to take advantage of playing weaker opposition to develop a more balanced fh/bh game). Looking for advice on what modern rubbers (and what fh/bh thickness) I should get that won't be too much for me to handle at my new weaker level (while still giving enough power to hit something Hard on the fh if I get bored!). Given I'll be playing infrequently, should I worry about durability (which seems to be reduced based on some comments I read)? |

I say, start with the rubbers you used to use before and see where they fail you. If they are to fast, then simply go with a thinner sponge on them.
If you actually have been 2200 Usatt, I think you'll be able to handle those rubbers. Might not be able to handle them as well as you used to, but no rubber replace regular practice. You should still have pretty much the same stroke (except short game) but with a little more mistakes, but that ain't something that slower rubbers will help you with. |

most of us here are not qualified to give advice to a 2000 rated player.

Thanks for the advice all! (I'm very unlikely ever to be a 2000+ player again btw - and all ratings apart from the 1600 were complete guesses anyway since I only played competitions in Europe) It sounded a bit like there'd been significant advances in technology since I stopped playing (tbh I never noticed any real difference between the Mark V/Sriver combo I used in '90 and the F1/Tenerocombo I ended up with in '04) and wanted to get some opinions on that. But perhaps that just over optimistic? On another forum someone suggested either Desto F1/F2 (fh/bh) or Coppa X2/X3 for something a touch slower (and apparently the "4th gen" Desto F1 is pretty different from what I played with) ... I'm leaning towards X2/X3 at the moment. |

To follow up one one point - that seemed to be exactly what many people "on the Internet" (lol) were suggesting - that newer rubbers which had "higher" throws (or maybe it was "lower" lol), allowing for more open bat angles and thus for higher percentage shots. I've no idea if that's true, of course...!

I've read claims that high throw rubbers are easier to play with, as they are more forgiving, but I think it's all down to your personal preference here. Some people like high throw, others like low throw rubbers, they each have their pro's and con's I suppose. If you want "easy to use" rubbers that still have good speed and spin, Andro Roxon 330 or 450 might suit you. 450 being a bit harder/faster then 330, but 330 is more forgiving. |
