Well guys, I've been out of the table tennis scene since I got injured in January. My knee is finally well enough to play table tennis again. I am extremely out of practice, but I played a tournament this weekend and it went quite well! I pretty much just played like I had nothing to lose.

Here's a video of a match between myself and my buddy who also trains at the training center that I train at. We normally have decently close matches, but had never played in a tourney before. I managed to sneak out the win.

It's not the whole match, just some clips shot with my iphone, but it's still a little taste of how my game looks these days....out of training for many months....

Notice the MYTT shirt ;)

Thanks! That's a result of a couple years worth of multiball drills...

It's my right knee. I've had MRI's, X Rays, and been to multiple doctors and nobody can diagnose what it is. They are baffled. I've been through 2 sessions of physical therapy, and it's about 80% now, but it can still be tweaked if I turn on it wrong. As a result, my footwork is pretty bad right now! There were many balls that I would have got to 6 months ago, but didn't reach this weekend. But I expected it, and I think I'll break 2000 rating so to be honest I'm more than satisfied.

Yeah got to love the quality of the iphone 4!

5 years I got the most useful hint from Stellan Bengtsson via Borko: "Nothing replaces training". So do it.
For me it seems you still defend your left, but now it clear you defend your right and push a bit more balance to your left thats why something looks strange on moving sometimes.
Dont forget warming up and also down(!) prevents.

Take care of that knee. Got to see a specialist maybe. Like a knee Dr.
Someone who just does knees. If your insurance is good, just keep looking and find somone who is willing to drill down to the real issue.

Surgery is last resort.
Also, you may want to try an alternative doctor, and possibly some supplements could help inflammation
there are supplements like zyflamend that are good. You still look like you are playing well!!! You just kept drilling his backhand...

Thanks for the comments guys!

Tablet92- Thanks! I'd say the number one thing holding me back from reaching 2100-2200 is my serve. Obviously, not practicing serves in 4 months really makes them go bad, BUT I was never a very good server to begin with. The little things like serving and serve return were the first to go when I was forced to stop playing. My strokes still remained intact(although not quite where they need to be), but that is just a result of a TON of multiball and drilling. I regret not practicing serves more, and now realize just how crucial they are. If I had a better short serve, i'd make it alot easier on myself.

HAHA the song in your clip is a song from coming to the greek right?  You still play pretty well. It's amazing how far you can come with a few years of good practice. I remember your old videos
(you against BH-man) what a difference. Are you still going to practice more with the Yao brothers?

Yep, from Get Him to the Greek!

ha, those old videos with BH-Man are just plain embarrassing......

Well, I'll be local for another year, and I'll train occasionally but not 3 days a week like I used to. Next year I'll be going to Eastern Kentucky, and will be there for 3 years. When that time comes, I doubt I'll be playing too much table tennis(at least no professional training) but hopefully there will be clubs nearby!

Since I can't add to youtube from here in Korea (without a Korean SSN), I have been considering deleting all my youtube vids. I look back on them now and almost want to vomit. They still served their purpose to have fun and keep me motivated, as well provide a historical reference, even if it was a really sucky one. (lot of ONEs) JDS, we have both moved eons away from where we waz back then. (3 years is a long time ago)

Nice match.  You look like you're playing well.  Beating Kerry will help your rating.  Isn't he about 200 above you (I haven't checked lately).

Good to see you back lildudejds. I play like you only a level down: All round play (can and like to do everything) with an emphasis on topspin attacks on both wings with placed blocks and quick counter top when possible.

One remark from a lower level player than you: what if you do not wait that much for your fh loop? it seems you go for the aesthetics and safety by waiting for the ball to fall down. The pressure on your opponent would be so much greater if you could contact with the ball when it's at the top of its trajectory. He or she would have less time to be ready to deal with your shots.

Yeah I know I'm too young for knee injuries :(

I'll be 21 in March.

It was injured playing soccer. I play a lot of soccer and that is what originally hurt it in January. They thought my MCL was torn, then they thought my meniscus, but neither of them appeared torn on an MRI.

I am 1957 and he is 2045. But, he did beat a 2300 saturday 3-0, so he should be going up. I'm not sure how much his loss to me will hurt him, or how much it will help me, but I'm hoping to break 2000. I also had a win against another 1950, so that will gimme a couple points at least.

Your movement looked great. Didn't look like a player with that kind of injury.
I'm surprised Kerry is still under 2100. Didn't practice much?

Good game, Jeff!

I could see how you weren't running down some balls which I am sure you'd do if your knee was OK.

1) right away - go to local sports goods store (or online) and buy a knee strap (10-15 dollars) like this one

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/188-8219437-4639327?asin=B000S9UXBE&AFID=Froogle_df&LNM=|B000S9UXBE&CPNG=health%20beauty&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001

Use it under your knee to stabilize your kneecap - it will help. It will not cure your underlying problem but it will certainly allow you to be more confident in your movements... and it's very cheap, too.

2) you are right about the serves. Go for the shorter ones with deceptive spin (heavy under, slow no-spin) etc. The very good serves are the ones that go into the center of the table, are short so that the second bounce is on the edge, low and spinny.

3) when you block with your BH, try and add more punch to your block. Otherwise your blocks against loops end up rather high and relatively slow - and that allows the other guy to continue his attack.

Good luck with your recovery and go for that 2000-2100 and sky's the limit!

JDS, it took me one full year of stopping Basketball and Soccer fro my Patella soreness to go away and the side of my knee (strain) to heal. You ought to recover sooner if you are not playing soccer. Soccer places a lot of stress on the knee and a bad pitch complicates it. (EDIT - But it is SO fun to play)

You will be unstop-able on your way to USATT 2100 within the next year if your knee holds up and you keep training like you have.

Unfortunately BH-man, my training is pretty much done. As some of you know, I am pursuing a career in the golf industry. I'll be transferring schools next year to start a PGA golf management Degree, and as it is now I am a supervisor over the bag room of a private club. Golf pretty much takes up most of my time and I just play table tennis for fun now. I'll still compete, but my serious training is over.

And I still play soccer twice a week :)

I was cleared to play, as they can't find any structural damage to the knee, and it isn't getting worse, so the worst I can do is hurt it and be sore for awhile. My knee is a baffling situation...
