I am in the process of training my visual/cognitive focus and was wondering what other players focus on when practicing or playing matches.
I would emphasize that I am interested, primarily, in what players think or know they are looking at as opposed to what they think they should be looking at. Your best guess is good enough. Examples: Service- do you watch the ball until ball contact? If you don't when do you look at the ball again? Do you look at the ball at all or do look at the other player? Their whole body/position? The paddle as it is striking the ball? Do you try to gestalt everything? Strokes- Do you focus on your opponents paddle at ball contact? How confident are you that you do this? Do you track the ball all the way into your paddle? I know contact time on you paddle is to short to actually see but do try anyway? Do you track your own shot, or do look too your opponent after you hit the ball(this makes the most sense to me)? Cognitive- When do you begin to cycle your stroke? How soon after, or before, your opponent hits the ball do decide when, where and how you are going to hit your ball? I am trying to develop a theoretical frame work for this part of my TT training based on the research done by Joan Vickers http://www.ucalgary.ca/hpl/vickers/. Might also have to buy her book http://www.amazon.com/Perception-Cognition-Decision-Training-Quiet/dp/0736042563/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1344013396&sr=1-2&keywords=gaze+in+sports. Link to PBS Q&A with small reference to TT http://www.pbs.org/saf/1206/hotline/hvickers.htm For an example of the kinds of things that I am trying get at look at this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxZREyWYjls Sorry won't embed. |
