Preliminary Round. While Zhao Zihao is a darn good penhold player, still beating Wang Chuqin is quite a bit of surprise.================ In the women singles Main Draw, Ito Mima vs Yang Xiaoxin will be an interesting match. Both of them are short and both play close-to-the-table game. They have played twice before: In 2015 Yang won. In 2019 Ito won. Since Ito's win is more recent, Ito is more likely to win in this third time encounter. |

Pitchford vs. Mizutani and Franziska vs. Jeong Youngsik should be great matches. Also interested to see what Kanak can do against Hugo.

Or, more likely, there is no "real Chinese threat". Assemble the best players. Sit all of them. The B team would win the Olympics.

Not clear how you define the B Chinese team but unless you mean the top 6 players in China, then no, I do believe that there are players in Korea, Germany and Chinese Taipei amongst others from Brazil and France who can beat the players outside the top 6 in China on a regular basis.

Individually? Sure. But can you beat China 4, 5 and 6 with a team from any one country? Don't think so.

CNT "B Team" isn't even the top 10 or 12 CNT players, they'd be way farther down, mostly junior or relatively unknown players. They often get beaten by random WR #30-100 players on the world tour. Not only do they absolutely need their team A players in order to win the olympics, but even having Liang Jingkun, Lin Gaoyuan, and someone else outside the top 6 really isn't enough to guarantee the gold. In doubles, they could very well lose to any of the pairs from Germany, Korea, or Japan (in the world team cup, even with Xu Xin as his partner, liang jingkun lost). And we saw how much Liang Jingkun struggled against Korea in a big team match under pressure. Lin Gaoyuan has the potential to also lose to in-form strong Germans, koreans, mizutani, or harimoto as he's shown recently.

WCQ was withdrawn from both mixed doubles and men’s doubles. Punishment, I guess.

I think WCQ will be pulled off for the games for the rest of this year too. He might just throw his future away.

Wow, WCQ suspended for 3 months. His coach LGZ also suspended for 1 month. Both were sent back immediately. They got very serious.

Was it just for what he did in the video above, or did he do something else? WOW CNT does not play around.

Throwing the paddle to the opponent's side of the table is really bad. I think CNT made the right decision to suspend him.
WCQ has been working hard to rise in the ranking, but he might be ruined by this.

Yes, they do, leaving things way more serious unpunished. SYS/WMY wrecking a match by calling a let after the point was scored and pressuring the umpire to grant that let comes to mind. That called for a much harsher penalty. Which wasn't given, probably because their shenanigans delivered them an undeserved victory over a JNT opponent... and if that's not playing around, I don't know what is.

Ah I see, so it's case by case. I think they probably see WCQ as a rising star and want him to understand if he is to carry himself to the top he has to behave like it. He's still young, probably good to stop this kind of behavior now. Hopefully doesn't derail him career wise, that would be quite sad.
