Does anyone know where to get a durometer (Shore scale A) for measuring sponge hardness? That would be so useful, and put so many arguements to rest!

They are quite expensive. The cheapest one I found is about $450USD here. Here is another site that sells type A durometers too.

Cheers haggisv!

The last link that SDRamones posted has a durometer for $345USD. The second link is an Australian site and lists a used Rex 1600 Pencil Dial Durometer Scale A for $480AUD.

I tested some sponges with an old handheld durometer that I borrowed from work.

It didn't come with much of a an instruction booklet. I was supposed to be a shore scale (don't know which one but i assume A), and used for measuring neoprene and rubber. It came with a calibation kit and appeared to be calibrated.

Well the sponge measured around 20, and results were quite inconsistent. the rubber was H2, so it's definitely harder than 20. not sure what it was measuring...

If I DO end up getting one of these, I would like it to be consistant and give sensible reading...will probably end up too expensive!

The problem may be in the Standard Deviation of the instrument.  The guage may not be well within the range of where sponge density lies in.

Even the Density Range of Shore A maybe be too large to serve it's purpose for TT.  Well at least the cheaper models.

You could contact Lars at Japsko and see which one he has.
