What exactly is fineline wood? I've noticed that its used for the outer ply in several Donic, Joola, and Andro blades but I cannot find a good description of what it is.
Is it a man-made remanufactured wood...like a high quality fiber-board material? Is it hard or soft compared to other common outer ply woods like Limba, Koto, Walnut, and Hinoki? |

Fineline is described in the Cornilleau Catalogue as "External colored Ayous layer."

Thanks for the help Peter. I was able to find the Cornilleau catalog that you referred to.
Thats interesting...I wonder if the external coloring changes the hardness of the ply. I've seen some people describe fineline as a fairly hard ply that is prone to splintering. But I thought ayous itself was a fairly soft wood. |

As far as I know fineline is gluing multiple - precoloured - veneers to each other until it makes a thick woodblock. Then they cross cut veneers or thicker slices from this perpendicular to the lamination. Coloured griphalves use fineline wood as well. Otherwise it,s not possible to get the colour deeper then the outer surface.

As far as I can tell, Donic talks about the Fineline only as the outer protection edge of the paddle.
The only fineline blade I have played with is an Epox Offensiv; fairly hard feel, good control for speedclass. I wonder how much of that has to due with the epoxy resin construction (each wood laminate layer is soaked in epoxy before assembling). A pretty fast, light blade was the result. |

My fineline blade has grains similar to hinoki (vertical grain), now I understand it happens when they cut across perpendicular to the lamination of woods.

Fineline don’t discript the kind of wood! Fineline ply are only small (fine) strips with are glued to a layer – ther can be used all kind of wood! Each strip are only a few mm wide so you have manny strips at one ply. |
