But acceleration should be higher with lighter racket, i.e. you achieve your top speed faster - this is important with a real game scenario, when you often don't have a time for full swing and with a heavy racket you may end up playing majority of your shots with sub-optimal swing speed (actually I can imagine that even in something like killing a lob scenario you may not want to swing really hard with heavy blade cos of potential problems with halting your movement (and recovery) and hitting a table with your racket) |

I'm not so sure about all players swinging at the same speed.. There was a time when I played a 140-150g paddle and was looping fine and when I borrowed a paddle around 180g, I started either missing loops, or they started hitting the top edge sending them flying upward. But then again that was just me |

I presume we are discussing heavier or lighter exemplars from the same brand and model, right. For example my Mazunov(105gr) is slower than my Hallmark Carbon Extreme(68gr)so what weight has to do with it

while I agree on the fact the person creates the power not the blade, a person always swinging at the same speed will have more power with a heavier blade.
all players will swing at the same speed whether they hold in hand a 150g or a 200g setup. the swing will not be slowed down by the weight of the setup, especially on the fh; if we acknowledge that, a heavier blade will give more powerful shots. |

For me, heavier blades tend to feel a bit more stable (feel that I make less mistakes and have more control with heavier blades) and it seems that it's easier to absorb energy, as well as generating power. However, the downside is that my strokes seem a bit slower (in terms of hand speed) compared as compared to light blades.

About the low weights - some of these votes were in the transition period between speed glue and tensors. I think if the vote were redone from scratch today, the numbers would likely shift upwards significantly, especially if shakehand was separated from penhold.

I like lighter setups too but there is such a thing as too light. I like 160-170gm for a double inverted paddle but many of my blades have LP 0X or SP mounted on them and that makes them much lighter, especially the LP 0X. Over 180 gm is too heavy. I have 3 hard bats and they are in the 110-130gm range. Blocking fast loops at the table is a challenge and one can really feel the impact.
You are right. The power comes from the person, not the paddle.

The lighter is the better in my book - though we are always constrained by other plying characteristics of the blade as well (which may be impossible to achieve currently without compromising overall weight). TBS (or whatever is on top these days) would be even better seller imo if it was weighing 60 grams.. I don't believe that you need heavier blade for more power since I realized that traditional penholders use very light setups (with one rubber only) and certainly you cannot say that they lack power. Some adaptation period needed for drastic change of weight of your racket is another thing. |

I have an old 101 grams black tag Schlager for fun; with modern porous sponge rubbers on both sides it could reach an easy 211gr total. My actual setup re+rhyzm+nimbus all max is under 185 grams, my ideal weight.

gee , this is a old thread but interesting for three things,
1. the people posting have 90% gone (well Jim was there) 2. 72% of people havn't chosen the 180-190 range that some current so called experts say is the ideal weight range 3. many people did the pole , over 40 amazing lol

I'm really happy with my set up right now even though admittedly I'm curious as to a few more grams will give my shots a little more power. I'm happy with it because I play comfortably with it, allows me to swing fast, have good reaction time, and doesn't tire my wrist as opposed to heavy set ups since I use my wrists a lot.

I just put MX-P both sides on my blade and now it is 189 grams. Is this too heavy? Previously i had 176grams and the heaviest I have used is 181.

over the table I think light is best regardless of balance
you have to get in and get out or get in and get out again....
a big heavy old bat balance as all hell aint gonna save you there unless you block, drive or punch a winner

Balance is more important than overall weight, particularly when playing at or over the table; less so for long distance looping.
Most of the best set ups I've tried this year have been 176-191 grams. One has been a 79 gram Donic Dima Sawtec with heavy 2mm 729 blue label rubbers, whereas another enjoyable set up was a 100 gram Mazunov with 2.1mm Bryce forehand and 2.1mm Sriver G2Fx backhand. The Sawtec set up was head heavy. whereas the Mazunov set up was a much better balance and a lot faster. |

I love my current set up, except one thing the balance is wrong.
The best feeling for my blade was when I put
f3 bigslam max on one side of my Ishlion with tenergy. It was perfectly balanced and could just rip into anything above, near or back from the table with the tenergy super quickly. My serves were super too, as the lightness helps tiny movements.
BUT
f3 bigslam sucks.
I hope tenergy 64 is lighter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
does anyone use those grip thingys like wrap around the handle? maybe that could balance it
I see Samsanov wraps something around the handle in the centre... what does it do?

I'd like to alter the poll options, but it's too late.
I think I'm happy with the results I've gotten here thanks to all the posters. As I thought most people would find 170 - 190g to feel right.
If I only played just to hit the ball around I'd use about 200g. For me the best part of the game is the long range counter looping. It feels so steady in the hand as well, so much momentum.
But in the reality of the game I find the 170 -180g range more sensible for at the table, where most seems to be lost and won. The need to do quick direction changes, especially in serves, where a follow up dummy and recovery for the third ball attack seems essential to my game.

Sorry, just a quick thought - I always believed that a few extra grams are not as important as a good balance of your racket. If you are simply putting heavier rubbers on the same blade then you are getting a few more grams but more importantly that shifts your balance into the head.
Then you go and think that those 4-5 extra grams messed you up, but it was not them, it was the changed balance. |

I have a few setups ranging in weight from 174 g to 188 g, but ideal one for me would probably be between 178 and 184.

I voted 150-160 because I play Cpen , and often take off the backhand rubber, my setups say I have pips on the backhand, but I have already taken off the 755, and the Pk OX is very light.

Maybe allow more increments of weight ranges...like multiples of 5 instead of 10. But even so, Id be in 2 ranges because I can not decide my fav setup. One is 168, other is 174. I was not sure how to vote either. If the choice was between 165-175.....that would be my vote.
OK,......I shall stop being over analytical here. Just hit the freaking ball dude!

Balance for me is most important also as I do not like head heavy either. Normal range for me is 168-182 depending on starting weight of the blade........... did not vote.

Even though I have no idea what weight my setup is I thogught i'd comment anyway. In an ideal world would the heaviest setup you could tolerate be the best setup for you? Considering the extra power and spin you would get from the weight.
I've recently moved over to something much heavier after using very light tensor rubbers. My wrist was sore after the first few sessions but i'm glad i've stuck with it cause i'm getting much more power and spin. Like filling your boots with cement, a heavy setup can only be a good thing! |
