I don't find MJ's and Koki Niwa's style any more similar to each other than any 2 other players are similar to each other. Except that they are left handed, offensive (vs. chopper), and Japanese, that's where the similarities end.

Not really.  Take away the Chinese, and there's 10 players that all had a good shot of winning this tournament - including Boll and JSH who lost early on in this tournament.

i just said take away the chinese and TIMO BOLL...

LOL yeah, you're just saying take away the best players in the world, Jun is the best player in the world

Yep, other than maybe JSH, Mizutani seems to be the next best player after Timo and the top Chinese. Ovtcharov is catching up, though. Dima burned through the Europe Top 12 like they were amateurs.

jun bested dima in their last two meetings in a singles event (harmony china open 2011 and austria open 2011), but it was other way around in wtttc 2012 and euro-asia 2012. jun seems to be pretty solid in singles events but suck in team events

I enjoy watching Shen YF give others a hard time with her specialty style.     Afterall, if I am not mistaken she is the only left handed shakehand FH PIP player at the top level.

After watching the first game in the final, I thought Kim KA would win since Shen's flat hits were not bothering her.    However, Shen started mixing in loops and pushes.

Shen YF usually takes up the ball very early, right off the bounce - means her reaction time is fast.  She has played in the US once thus has a USATT rating of 2730 - beat a 2706 player but lost to a 2746 player.

Couldn't find Ding Ning and Shen Yanfei on ITTF singles from 2012 to 2007.
Maybe that is China Super League game?

Shen Yanfei highest wr was 15 (July 2011)

to me, real dissapointment was the referee quality. in a video, misjudgment for the first yellow card case was very clear. Liu's service did touch her uniform as Ishikawa insisted. I don't know why the female referee was so sure about her deadly wrong judgment even though she apparently was in a position where she can't really see it as Liu's back hid it. i don't believe any female at her age has better sight of fast moving things than 19 years old top athlete.

going forward, ittf should disclose referee's name, nationality, and experience so that anyone can easily see it.

I also recommend them to utilize video playback for better judgement as table tennis is such a high speed sports.

This is the pro leagues?  Start crying and a red card in a crucial moment can get revoked?  Ittf is a joke league

and Ishikawa wins the 7th game,  so unprofessional,  I wonder if Maze starts crying about a red card it'll get revokedLOL

For those who are interested in Ishikawa - Liu Jia incident but don't have time to watch the whole match, just skip to 41:30 and  to 48:30.

Yellow Card - umpire warns Ishikawa for misbehaving as she called let during service return.

Red Card - umpire gives it as Ishikawa kicks a ball after she wins a beautiful shot. No body had any idea what happens, including Ishikawa, and Liu Jia.

1) Now why would the umpire think Ishikawa want to kick a ball? Do you get in trouble if it was by accident?
2) Why did the umpire award the point to Liu? I didn't even know such a rule existed.

I can understand why Ishikawa cried, she was bullied in public by that nasty umpire, and thank goodness for the hero (match referee) coming to save the day, otherwise we will see ninja stars aiming for that useless umpire

These are the facts of the Ishikawa - Liu incident.      It all happened in the 6th game.

At 2-2, Liu J served, Ishikawa raised a hand and indicated that the ball touched Liu's shirt.    Neither the referee nor the score keeper saw it.      Liu denied it but replay seemed to show that the ball touched her shirt after contact with her racket.    Ishikawa pressed on a bit and got a yellow card.     The point was given to Liu.

At 10-10, Ishikawa won the point but when she went to pick up the ball, she kicked it away according to the referee.    The camera cut to upper body close up at that point, so we can't see the kick.   A red card was issued against Ishikawa.

As for interpretation, this how I see it.

For the yellow card point...   The referee had no chance to see the ball hitting Liu's shirt, since Liu was backing to the referee.     The score keeper could have seen it, but the angle was not so good.    It was kind of square to Jiu J so the ball went across Liu's body.       We could give Liu the benefit of the doubt too since she might have started to look away.       In this case, I don't blame the referee for not penalizing Liu but I am not sure how the point was given to Liu as they did not play it.

For the red card point, I don't doubt Ishikawa kicked the ball, but the situation was such it didn't make sense for her to do it on purpose.   She won the point and it all happened quite fast.      So I think Ishikawa got the short end of it.        I would say though I think I saw Ishikawa kick the ball away in frustration before.

Yea, Niwa stays way closer to the table than Mizutani, take the ball off the bounce a lot more.  Very different styles.

Someone finally posted a video of this incident (for some reason, the match wasn't available on itTV on demand). What's unprofessional and absurd is the umpire's decision to penalize Ishikawa, not Ishikawa's behavior. Where does she kick the ball? How does that deserve a second yellow?? Fortunately this awful call was reversed by the referee.

^ she did kick the ball when it falls on her foot lol
It was an accident most probably, and that's why the decision was reversed.
