    Posted: 07/03/2012 at 8:28am
Hey guys,

I am thinking of getting a new blade since my Xiom Zetro Quad is great, but quite heavy and a little too fast for me since I am still developing. My style is offensive with a focus on looping and loop-driving, I only block close to table or when I cannot perform a loop in time.

I am currently using Barracuda/T64 for my BH and T05/T64 for FH. These are the rubbers I would use with a new blade as well.

Also, I hate head-heavy blades, but I understand that is most likely ggoing to happen anyway since I use heavy rubbers, but a blade with good balance would be much appreciated.

So, the blade should be light, loop very well, have nice control, but still be able to block efficiently when needed.

The choices I have narrowed it down to are: Ma Lin Carbon, Avalox P500, and maybe Offensive Classic Carbon...

Any advice from you guys will be much appreciated. Thanks!

I agree, the ZQ is totally awesome, but it is not time for me to use it yet Wink

I am def going to keep it though, and when I have developed my skill and accuracy more I will switch back to it Big smile

Ok guys, so far the votes are mostly for the P500. Any for Ma Lin Carbon? or is it just a bad choice?

once upon a time I clung to the zetro quad

but the journey brought me to the OSP Expert. My most recent one was 85.9 grams

it's a looping masterpiece

for a little more insight, the journey went like this (this is the progression of my "primary blade"... along the way I was tested a bunch others)

(many, many blades, mostly carbon,... all of which were too fast for me)-> xiom zetro quad -> xiom v1 (a fun blade for smashing) -> Burn OFF- -> BBC 9-10-9 (which I now consider the pinnacle of carbon blades) -> OSP Expert.... and now I own 3 of them

Just a thought but have you thought about just switching rubbers? I'm still a developing player myself. I was using fast rubbers like rasant and t64 but I switched to Palio HK1997. My consistency doubled. Can now use a normal arm swing and not worry about the ball going long all the time. It has decent speed and good spin and I feel like I can't miss with it. I use it on a Stradivarius and I love the way I'm playing now. My confidence has gone up tremendously. The HK1997 is only 12 bucks a sheet which is nice too. Just my two cents from a fellow developing player.

the one I had was 85 grams. I was hoping it would be a little flexy since I had tried someone else's and it seemed to be so. but, I found mine rather stiff.

i felt consistent in the short game and more confident in looping than with the zetro quad, but as I kept going to slower blades, my confidence kept rising

i'd hate to go back to the xiom flat flared handle at this point

tabletennis11.com is selling them for like $65 if you're interested in them

You might want to specifically order an 86 gram Expert like the_theologians latest one, it will still be head heavy because the blade has a large head but at least you will save 4 grams overall and that helps.

From your original 3 choices the P500 is the way to go. The problem you will have with your plan about one day being good enough to use the Zetro Quad is that the better you get the more you will desire slower and slower blades, using it again will never happen, trust me you may as well sell it now and buy something useful.

you know what's funny is my 86 gram Expert doesn't feel that head heavy, even with heavy rubbers on it. it plays like a dream really. and yes, I did request it to be made that light

Zetro Quad is a OFF+ Hinoki Carbon, about as fast a blade design there is.

i've never used a clipper... I'm trying to think of 7 ply blades I have  used... various dawei 7 plies, persson powerplay

i don't know. hard for me to judge its speed overall, but my foremost impression of it was how "crisp" it was. smashes were very crisp. Smile

Been there, done that with Hurricanes (2,3, 3 Neo, and even H3 with Japanese sponge), Tin Arc & TA3, and Thor, and about a dozen more rubbers LOL

The simple fact is that I'd honestly rather keep the ESN rubbers/Tenergy and switch to a slower blade, rather than go through the pain of trying to find a slower rubber I like all over again, since I know I like Tenergy and Barracuda...

So, I guess one day I'll have to relinquish my ZQ Ouch

However, I am curious as to whether or not OSP could custom make me an Expert that had a slightly smaller head than usual. Or if they could do a low weight (80g or so)?

Also, if the OSP Expert costs an arm and a leg, I'd rather just get the P500 since it seems to have a great reputation for a reasonable price...

yes, absolutely OSP can make an Expert with a smaller head... although imo that kind of defeats the full purpose of the Expert, as the head length affects flex

my last one costs about $90 shipped...

It doesn't cost an arm and a leg, perhaps only an arm. A P500 will only cost you up to your Elbow.

They will custom make it, then again changing an Expert enough to get it down to 80grams would make it something different than what it is.

I've used the P500 and it's a good blade, it's cheap, it's about the same speed as an Expert. In the end the difference wont be huge, the Expert "feels" better but that probably wont change the score in a match. I prefer to pay the extra half an arm for the extra nice feel but you will still be fine with the P500.

I've got the V1 which is supposed to be slower and that's solid OFF, by design the V1 _must_ be slower than the Zetro Quad, a TBS is OFF also. 100%, there's nothing OFF- about those blades.

Sorry to hijack the thread but didn't want to post a new one since there was one already here...

If I were to play modern defensive, which one of these blades (that I have, do not want to buy another one T.T) would be the best?

128Yin,
As suggested further up this thread by others what you want is a Petr Korbel.
Got mine a year ago and its great for looping close and mid range, blocking and for controlled pushes.
Good value too - no need to spend any more.

Good luck

Thank you! But I decided to go with the P500 Smile. I hear they are quite similar, though, so hopefully I won't be disappointed with my choice Tongue
