Hi and as my username indicates, my back goes out once in a while. While playing this Sunday, i slipped on the the hard tiled floor and wrenched my back a little. I will be out of action for about 1 to 2 weeks. I was wondering about the red padded flooring i see at the TT clubs. I understand the german version is the best one and also the most expensive version. Is there a cheaper or equivalent version that i can purchase and use when i play on Sundays. Thanks for your help.

I believe forum member BRS installed one in his garage - hopefully, he'll respond to your thread.
As for the red floor - every time I play on it - I get knee pains too much grip for me. Prefer wood floors. |

I am 45 and my back hurt too when I played on a concrete garage floor. I bought two rolls of red floor mat from Steven at Joola after the NA teams last year. It was $400 a roll, $800 for my 20'x22' garage. I got a break on the shipping because I also bought a used Joola table at the same time.
It is not the same as the Taraflex floor with padding. They have that at the full-time club where I play sometimes and it is so soft the ball will only rise a few inches when you bounce it on the floor. I love that stuff and could play forever on it without any back pain. But Pondus has that in his TT Sanctuary and I think he said it was $3000 or so. Anyway the Joola floor mats do greatly reduce the impact, just not as much as the pro stuff, and they are very non-slip. Even in Florida with constant humidity I have not had any problems with the floor. So I recommend it. $800 is a lot cheaper than hurting your back.

I recently covered our garage with these rubber tiles. http://www.rubberflooringinc.com/interlocking-tile/regrind-rubber-tile.html I ordered 120 tiles which covered my garage of 30ft by 16ft nicely. I bought the 8mm version for the extra thickness. I'm very happy with how they play. They have just the right level of traction and they have a little more give/shock absorption than the official rubber mats. But it isn't like you sink into them at all. They are, after all, solid rubber. |

When dropped from about four feet, a ball will bounce about one foot. You can throw the ball down and get it to bounce 3-4 feet. So I would call it "low bounce" rather than "no bounce." The bounce is much more consistent than the mats I've played on. The regulation mats often have some air gaps in places and the bounce varies from being pretty good to almost literally zero bounce. The biggest negative for me with these tiles is that they smell like car tires. They've been installed for about two months now, and the smell is now much lower than when I first installed them. But it is still there. My expectation is that in 6 months to a year the smell will right about zero. Overall, I'm very happy with them. Edited by wturber - 11/16/2014 at 11:18am |

I remember we had a discussion one day and the weight lifting room rubber tiles were mentioned. (today this one sounds good: http://www.rubberflooringinc.com/interlocking-tile/foam/12-eco-soft-tile.html at 11mm thickness in black) Yes the bad bounce and the additinal work to pick up the ball is sometimes annoying with gerflor like rubber floors; your solution seem MUCH better on all counts including for the knees. is your ping pong palace always that clean or did you make sure it was before shooting a movie for us? |

I would be concerned with anything that is "foam" being durable enough. I'll review the thread on rubber tiles. Right now my only concern is whether they will shed rubber crumbs over time. The floor is actually a bit dirty right now and there's more stuff laying around than usual. My wife has friends over for ping pong get-togethers about once ever one or two weeks and she damp mops the floor then. We have the roll down blinds to, hide garage implements (mess), provide a clean visual backdrop, and to make it easy to control where balls bounce. So that adds to the clean look. The floor itself makes the garage look neater as well. I think it improves the acoustics a bit as well. |

I've been playing TT and using the garage for over ten years. My wife started playing a little over a year ago. In less than a year, we find me spending a weekend installing a rubber floor. Now, you tell me who is or is not the genius. :) |
