China has been dominating table tennis scenery for a long time. However, there have been plenty of periods of European dominance as well. In this video, we look at one of the statistical aspects of the World Championships history. Which European player has won the most games against the Chinese at the World Championships?

Samsonov's four wins against Chinese were all achieved in the MS at the Manchester Worlds in 1997 ,  taking out Ma Lin, Wang Liqin, Ding Song and Kong Linghui in successive rounds (before being beaten by Waldner in the Final). That's a really impressive run. He only dropped two games.

A bit unfortunate when your peak is so early.

Great video, it helps put Waldner and Persson in context and to some degree Boll and Dima as well.

The ages of European dominance of TT?  Sort of reminds me of the Roman Empire.  It's something we like to talk and read about, it had influence on the way things are now, and it happened a really long time ago.

The ball was always not round enough or outright broken.

Waldner managed to beat at least 1 CNT player between 1987-2000, that is 8 WTTC consecutively (2 CNT players at '87, '89, '95 and '97).

The notion that China was weaker during that era should be put to rest now.

China was so weak in 1991 that they couldnt reach the final , almost all players were fired.

That is an amazing statistic. To put it in hyperbolic form: Waldner dominated Chinese players at the World Championships over 3 decades!

Another way to look at the stats is the number of times the said player has played against China.

Waldner
WTTC 1983-2000
12/22=54.5%

Boll
WTTC 2001-2021
6/19=31.6%
Viscaria FL - 91g
+ Neo H3 2.15 Blk - 44.5g(55.3g uncut bare)
+ Hexer HD 2.1 Red - 49.3g(68.5g 〃 〃)
= 184.8g

Making Boll the second most successful player against the CNT in living memory.
