I've been using one of my friends paddles for a little while, but I think it's time I purchased my own.
About my play: I'm fairly new to playing with a focus on actual improvement (about 6 months of playing with friends afterschool, on weekends etc.), and so I don't really have a "style" or a particular offensive/defensive outlook on playing. I play penhold, and from what I've tried I like lighter paddles in general (don't know exact weights, unsure of blade/rubber names that I've used and so I couldn't look them up :|). I keep reading that as a new player I should stay away from too expensive or fast rubbers, as they will be too difficult to control. Even knowing this, it's difficult for me to pick out rubbers/blades that would fit my game as I really don't have anyone to discuss with. A little looking around leads me to believe that a yasaka penhold blade would work well. They seem to have good reviews and because I plan on the blade lasting much longer than the rubber, I want to get one of decent quality. Please suggest anything, I feel like I know nothing about blades. Here's the couple that I'm looking into http://www.gotabletennis.com/Yasaka_Gatien_Extra_Chinese_Penhold_p/ya4ex.htm http://www.gotabletennis.com/Yasaka_Extra_7_Chinese_Penhold_p/ya4ex7.htm Really unsure as to what I want to spend or look for in rubbers. I'd assume that I want a sponge thickness of about 1.5-1.9, and because the blades are about $40 the rubbers hopefully won't add up to more than $40 as well. Again, please suggest anything you think fits! A few that people have recommended that I think would work, http://www.gotabletennis.com/Butterfly_Flextra_p/05210.htm http://www.megaspin.net/store/default.asp?pid=r-729-08 (wouldn't 2.15 be too thick? It seems I've read that increased thickness = more speed) Very newbie question, but if I were to buy one of these rubbers, would it only come with one side? So if I wanted to have both sides of my blade covered, I would have to buy 2 rubbers? It's difficult to navigate through all the table tennis forums/reviews/guides I've been looking at recently without really knowing what all of it means, so I apologize if I've really misjudged something or have some of my facts completely wrong. |

Don't worry about what you do and don't know. We'll all help you learn.
You're absolutely correct on the blade. They can last a really long time. You will need to order two sheets of rubber. One for each side. I will leave the rubber and blade suggestions to others, but the Flextra should be fine for a backhand for RPB (Reverse Penhold Backhand). Check out videos of Wang Hao on how it's done. |

I had two blades you listed: one Yasaka Gatien Extra (old), one Yasaka Extra(new, thicker) and YE7. YE7 is seven layers blade and faster.
My both YEs (modified by myself) are excellent blades, and the old YE is best for me among all blades I had. The best rubber for YE I believe is Chinese hard rubber(H3 or TG3), because YE is slightly slow and soft. I like tuned TG2 better. YE and YE7 are good for RPB. Wang Hao, Ma Lin and many professional players used YE before.
I do not know if you real need a rubber with sponge thickness under 2.00mm.
The best and most efficient way for finding blade and rubber for yourself is to try several friend's penhold setup. Many players have lots of blades and rubbers.
Good luck!

Hello, and welcome to the forum.
And I think you've done some excellent research! http://www.gotabletennis.com/Yasaka_Gatien_Extra_Chinese_Penhold_p/ya4ex.htm Good blade. Don't go for the 7 ply (too fast). http://www.gotabletennis.com/Butterfly_Flextra_p/05210.htm Good rubber. Most of the U1000 level players here should be using this. In fact, I should have spent the first two years when I came out of the basement using this rubber. Instead, I got an OFF blade and fast-ish and wayy too spinny rubber. Set me back about two years of playing. If you are just playing with friends (no coach, no drilling) even 1.5mm Flextra would be fine; you should be able to develop a good flat hit and will be able to develop control over the table (where penhold is supreme). If you decide to learn to create heavy topspin, or loop, you'll have to make really "thin" brushing contact. No small feat with thin rubber. But in any event, it looks like they only have 1.9mm - more sponge = more potential spin/easier spin creation/and more receptiveness/sensitivity to incoming power (because the sponge acts like a trampoline). Stay away from super tacky rubbers and super spin rubbers while you are learning. That 729-08 is geared toward very high level intermediate players. You'll thank me later when one of your friends buys the "best and the spinniest rubber" and you give him a sound beating. If you are going to learn just traditional penhold (no reverse penhold backhand) you can forgo the second sheet of rubber and save money (and weight). Normally, you would have to buy 2x sheets of rubber. Also, the rules state that you have to have a red and a black side. So you can paint one side red/black or buy a paint sheet (didn't see one at GoTableTennis) - one of my buddies uses this for a paint sheet http://www.gotabletennis.com/Friendship_Dr_Evil_OX_Hard_Bat_Short_Pips_Out_p/dr.htm Every once in a while he serves with it, just to make sure you are paying attention. Unlike a paint sheet, it's legal to hit the ball with that. |

Thanks for the responses, I'll definitely be buying the 1.9 Flextra and the Gatien Extra. I don't really need a second rubber, but are there any decent ones out there around $10? I might not even end up putting it on, but when I order everything I don't want to apply 1 side, find out I don't like the weight with only 1 rubber on it, and have to wait a few more days for another to come in.
edit: Also by Friendship, should I get this rubber as a backhand? (Won't really come into play much, only $14) Edited by 0mgVitaminE - 04/11/2011 at 2:13am |

Gatien Extra is a flexible blade. It could be too flexible and playing characteristics is completely different if only one rubbler is attached.

I would consider the LKT lightning rubber for $5 at zeropong as it's very light and high control. 2.0
