I have a newbie friend who has decided in the last month or so to play penhold. He likes Supersoft fx el 2.0 on a custom crap premade blade I striped and transformed into penhold blade, but he is now playing comp and I suggested he get new blade and rubber.
I have considered from oneofakind trading 2 penhold blades:
LKT Mind Game
729 Bomb blade
His game? Well, it is kinda all over the place. I would say allround with a twitchy edge to attack :D. He is learning the ropes :D.
I was thinking the light supersoft fx el rubber, but what thickness I am not sure. Could he handle 2.2 *shrug*? Is there a big diff with those rubbers thickness wise? Also he needs both sides. His first week in comp he was told not to play with his blade because he had no red side (bare side). He actually tries rpb. So I was thinking 2 sheets of the supersoft fx el but not sure with thicknesses.
Are there any other rubbers he could try for penholder? I was also contemplating Cream mrs and supersoft on his backhand. If I put that on one of those blades would he be able to chop allright with it (like control wise not too hard for him)?

He's still learning the ropes and wants to RPB? Maybe recommend that he not RPB yet, it's quite challenging for a newbie.

i second that. took me a quite some time before i even considered RPB neway. 729 bomb i hear is quite a good beginner penhold blade. plus the other popular all-wood blades (W6, YE) i've always played with 2.2 *shrugs* |

hehe Yeah I just showed rpb once to this guy and he took it on himself to use it. I don't teach him, he tries it say maybe 1 - 2 times a game depending if he makes the first one . And he always misses the second one and then plays normal again . He only had one side rubber and other bare and he still tries playing rpb with the bare blade . He is very keen. persistant and experimental. I let him go by himself and give him best practice I can.
I actually might refrain from getting rubber for him on rpb but if he still from time to time try bare batting rpb I might recomend him get a supersoft fx for it . I just need to think of something to put on other side that is red so he doesn't get pulled up on that again *shrugs*..

There's nothing wrong with learning reverse backhand from the start, especially if they want to forgo trad. bh completely.

For some guys RPB just comes naturally. I tried to learn it, but I got frustrated and the weight created pain in my arm. However, my friend who just switched from shake hand to penhold, plays RPB almost immediately without any problem at all, he is even using his shakehand blade but hold it penhold style.

The Bomb is thinner than the Mind Game, so would be the better blade for RPB. If he wants to learn RPB, better to do so from the start as it's harder to relaern it later once you're used to a traditional penhold backhand. Keep the rubber thin (2.0 or even 1.8 on the backhand) if he's a beginner. The Bomb will be much faster than his premade blade. If he wants more speed and spin later, he could put Geospin or CJ8000 on his forehand.

Thanks guys for all that. I will go for the thinner Bomb blade for him.
Light Supersoft fx 1.5 or 2.0 sounds like the winner on rpb side as something to put on. Normal side on that blade not sure. Juggling between Supersoft, Cream, Higher or geotacky. I am thinking for that allround rubber that would suit him with that blade. Tough choice for him there.
I might just see how a supersoft 2.0 goes for him on one side. Kinda trial it for both sides and then maybe he/we look at another rubber after that.
Cheers guys.
