Omg, Feng Tianwei and Sun Bei Bei's placing are so close in the Women's Singles, they will vs each other the next round. Sun beat Feng by 4-3 in 2007, I wonder who will win this time...

We could see Kenta Matsudaira - Chen Qi and maybe Kenta vs. Zhang Jike, early in the draw. It would be interesting.

Wang Hao was beaten recently by Wang Liqin and I guess he gave up to this tournament. He did the same earlier this year when Ma Long defeat him.

boll has to play his germany league final match this sunday.  that's why he, ovtcharov and suess are not in china this weekend.

that said, he still doesn't look a 100% yet...

I really don't understand why Gao Ning and Wang Yue Gu cancelled in this competition, though they won the singles event in 2009 CTTC in Glasgow, Scotland.

OMG! Yu Meng Yu's first opponent is Guo Yan! That's so unlucky! I would predict that Guo Yan will win but I'll still support Yu. Hope she'll grab the opportunity as top seed to capture the U21 gold. She lost many chances of getting gold in the Under 21 events. Cry

Why you do think Guo played like a retard in this match? I observed and realise she was shouting "cho!" when she was chasing up against Yu Meng Yu. I think Yu was in good shape for this tournament.

As I said before, one game is not enough to judge one player. Now seems Kenta is nothing more than just one of those "ordinary" players.

definitely,  Kenta was probably playing at a high level in a big event on home court.   He didn't look impressive for his team in the German league.  If he really was a threat to the Chinese, he should've beaten most of those low ranked Europeans in the dttl, but he didn't.  He's still young, but too soon to consider him a major threat to the Chinese like Boll.

Same with Ishikawa who just lost to Liu Shiwen 4-0

Thats not true at all. He is no.1 in U-18 and thats for the whole world and he has won numerous titles, so you are incorrect.

how many world class 18 year olds are there besides him to compete with though? on a world scale with the rest of the men, that kid is still just a chump. What kinds of titles has he won? I bet they are all japanese titles.. no international titles right? (correct me if I'm wrong) But this isn't bad talk, its all just expected because the kid is only 16.

But I like him a lot aside from that. And he is still 16, and I think he's got more power than Mizutani does already. I think he will be better than Mizutani when he becomes 20. But I also agree with the fact that you cant make expectations and good judgements just from one good match with Ma Lin.

I am looking forward to Jiang Tianyi vs Joo Se Hyuk. I think Jiang Tianyi is quite a decent player and in recent games with Wang Hao, i think he performed admirably. I believe Joo is also in great form with the speed glue ban, so this should be a good match.. hopefully.

Actually thats the  normal result anybody would expect from a game between Chen Qi and Kenta.
Just because the kid played out of his skin, at home in a losing game against Ma Lin theres no need to make excuses for him losing to a player way above his normal level.
I would be quite surprised if the chinese needed to study Kenta's game and services in order to beat him, like they had to have a team meeting to say like "hey this guy is a real threat and we need to meet to find ways to beat him" LOL

Kenta Matsudaira is 18. He'll be out of the U18 next year, and be a contender for U21 where currently, people like Ma Long, Ovtcharov, Mizutani Jun, Jiang Tianyi, and Zhang Jike set up camp.

My bad. Thanks for correcting me Smile. I was under the impression he was 16, but i stand corrected. You make a good point then. Next year, if he is in under 21- look at that list. Thats an intimidating list of people to deal with.

What a fantastic match! Jike ZHANG and JOO suit each other soooo well ... Just listen to the roars of the spectators! It's a long time since I've seen anything as well as this defensively in male TT, I cannot figure out why Zhang can't kill the balls (I guess Ma Long has a bit more fierce smashes, but we'll see if Joo reaches the semis) ... Come on now, Jike!

Joo Se Hyuk's style is so different from what Zhang is used to, he just didnt seem comfortable the whole match. I'm sure he will do better next time. I think Joo has beaten almost every single top Chinese player in his era at one time or another.

Thanks, hope you're right ... What about Hou Yingchao (whom I've read about, but yet not seen play), was/is his style similar to Joo's? As far as I remember he was nicknamed The Magician or Merlin, and was one mean motherchopper ...

At this level of competition, all players study their rivals no matter if its a match between the #1 world player vs the #1000. This happens in all the sports.

Once again a great Joo match! My theory that Ma Long had the power, that Jike Zhang lacked a bit, to kill the chops from Joo was right, but to a certain excent only. Ma Long now makes more errors than usual, perhaps knowing that he has to take the initiative. And Joo displays indeed his qualities of chop-chop-never-miss and wonderful counter-attacks.

Now into the 7th game ... Hoooh  Shocked

Jesus, it's a close one ...

If Ma Long loses, then WLQ will be trough to the final because he has a better result against Joo then Ma Lin..
First title for WLQ in two years? we'll see...

Man, Joo had FIVE match points... But good play by Ma when it mattered.

Ma Lin wins 1. game 11-7

Don't know why CCTV5's not broadcasting it ...

2. game: WLQ 11-7

3. game: WLQ leading early, Ma Lin coming back ... 8-8 ... and 9-9 ... Fantastic block by WLQ, game point, but 10-10 ... Game point Ma Lin, but 11-11 ... Ma Lin takes it 13-11

4. game: Lots of errors, Wang - Ma 4-5 ... Now 6-6, and 7-6 ... 8-8 ... 9-9 ... Game point Ma ... 10-10 ... Nice play WLQ, 11-10 ... 12-10 WLQ!

Date Posted: 06/07/2009 at 1:37am
This match is characterized by fewer long rallies, compared to Joo-Ma Long, but maybe they'll come ...

5. game: What a loop-rally, Ma looping back from nowhere, but WLQ hits net, now 4-4, as close as ever ... 8-8 ... Ma Lin takes it 12-10 ...

6. game: 8-4 WLQ, looking like a 7th ... 11-6 WLQ

7. game: Wang-Ma 5-2, a repeat of the WC-semi? 8-5, Ma clawing his way back ... Matchpoint WLQ, 10-7 ... WLQ does it, to the delight of shouting spectators!

Thanks, hope you're right ... What about Hou Yingchao (whom I've read about, but yet not seen play), was/is his style similar to Joo's? As far as I remember he was nicknamed The Magician or Merlin, and was one mean motherchopper ...

Not really, all the main choppers are different, Hao Yingchao doesn't really use a forehand chop, but a big sidespin loop from away, Joo is really good at both side chops and then switches to a constant attack and Chen Weixing is very, very consistant.

It will be very exciting to see if WLQ can do it this time. In the WC final in Yokohama he played a very pacy Wang Hao, and though Ma Long hits it harder than anyone, the Joo match surely revealed him being a little inconsistent and short-headed at times. And against the experience of WLQ ...

Who are your money on, and who are your hearts with? I tend to favour Ma Long a bit, both regarding wallet and guts. However, I know there's a lot of WLQ supporters in here, right?

I think Ma Long, despite being not bad against choppers, is not GREAT against choppers, so things must've been different enough to affect his playing style considerably. Against WLQ, they're both of the offensive strategy, so I believe that Ma Long will have no problems here, mentally, at least.

The Chinese coaches know exactly when to call timeout.

Ma was giving up but I think Liu told Ma to give Joo the loops and then counterloop.

Maybe =D

What I realized from watching Liu Shiwen vs. Guo Yue, is that she is not nearly as good against Guo Yue compared to against some of her earlier opponents like Fukuhara Ai, where she can just whip out the speed and the smashes without worry. It seems like she's definitely playing a bit more on her toes. Also, I think Guo Yue probably has better footwork, just from what I'm seeing, but generally speaking, I think Liu Shiwen hits harder, so her shots are harder to counter.
