Those Limba outer plies are so gorgeous, do you finish them with a light varnish? thanks for sharing.

This is actually dark Limba, but i select the pieces without streaks for the outer layers and reserve the others for the medial plies. Yes, i lightly seal most of my blades with an acrylic lacquer.

3 custom blades and 3 of my favorite compositions so far:

My most popular composition, this one goes to a club mate who wanted a second one. A solid All+ blade with great feeling and control.

Limba/Limba/Basalt Fibre/Kiri x3/Basalt Fibre/Limba/Limba - 80.7g - 5.75mm - 1140Hz

This is one has the same composition as my personal blade. The feeling i get with this blade is like nothing i ever tried before. Faster than the previous blade but the spin... so much spin!

Limba/Limba/ALC/WRC/ALC/Limba/Limba - 87.1g - 5.85mm - 1160Hz

This one is faster than the other two but not crazy fast, still very controllable. Great for over-the-table play.

Maple/Beech/GF/Balsa/GF/Beech/Maple - 72.1g - 6.4mm - 1335 Hz

What does the each frequency range indicate roughly? Is it to do with dwell, control, speed etc.

I know it has been discussed on this forum, but I can't be bothered to search plus I prefer to hear it from you.

The frequency range is related to stiffness and stiffness is related to speed. Between two similar blades, the one with the higher frequency will be faster, however that may not be the case with different blades.

I prefer to use it as a measure of softness. I like blades in the 1150-1300 Hz, that's the Korbel, Acoustic, Virtuoso range.

Beautiful blades!

Is there a reliable source for the ALC fabric,
or could you maybe sell enough for a couple of blades?

Well, I'm from Portugal and I get my ALC from Spain. I'm sure there are a lot of better options for you locally.

I was only able to find one European weaver of Carbon-Vectran fabric ...G-Angeloni,
and one in Taiwan.

Do you happen to have a website for your Spanish supplier?

Just about any weaver can weave you any fabric given a certain large minimum quantity.

Problem is Carbon-Vectran Fabric is really only useful in a few  applications,so there is little incentive for retailers to carry it.

Well, when i say ALC i mean Aramid, which i suppose it's what every builder means. As you say, Vectran is very hard to find but Aramid is much more common. I think that for table tennis applications the difference is negligible, you have other variables that are much more important such as weave type, density, etc...

2 custom blades for a friend of mine

The first one is "Apolónia" inspired, but he wanted something a little faster and harder. He also wanted the Portuguese flag in the handle.

Limba/Anigre/ALC/Ayous/ALC/Anigre/Limba - 93.0g - 5.95mm - 1370Hz

The second blade is "Ovtcharov TC" inspired but he wanted something less reactive and fast. He also wanted the Azores flag in the handle.

Anigre/ALC/Limba/Kiri/Limba/ALC/Anigre - 86.0g - 5.60mm - 1370Hz

Obrigado Assam! Por acaso ainda n£o trabalhei com ZLC mas só porque n£o consegui arranjar. De resto tenho ALC, Carbono, Fibra de Vidro, Fibra de Basalto e Kevlar. Ou seja, praticamente todas que andam por aí.

How much do you think it would weight?

What are handle options in terms of wood selection?

Hi, fmarek

my estimation just for the blade without handles is:

Limba/Spruce/Kiri/Spruce/Limba ~ 54g
Limba/Spruce/Ayous/Spruce/Limba ~ 60g

A single handle cup can range from 8g to 17g depending on the king of wood used and if it's hollowed or not. Just for reference, the handle cups on the blade above weight 17g.

I have in stock several woods for handles, such as Ayous, Basswood, Spuce, WRC, Agba, Mahogany, Beech, Teak, Purple Heart, Wenge and a few others that I can't identify. Other woods are available on order.

Hm ... 60 + 17 is pretty light blade I would say. I thought blades of that weight usually have balsa cores. Something does not add up here.

All blades in your pictures are very beautiful but most of them look like handle is shiny, making me think it is unnecessary polished or sealed.

I like ZJK handle, but no idea about wood used there. I like it's texture and the way it absorbs sweat, never becomes slippery.

Btw, what price range we are looking at for finished product?

Actually only the last two are sealed. They were made for me so I used a varnish to bring out the colors and protect the wood. I know it can get slippery for some people if they sweat a lot but it's not a problem for me. Some handles don't have any finish, others have tung oil or tru oil. The colored handles need something to seal the color and keep it from degrading over time. In those cases I use tru oil which is a film finish. It leaves a very thin layer and it's very comfortable to the touch, not slippery at all. Tung oil is a penetrating finish and leaves that nice satin look. It's also not slippery.

Big manufactures use laminated wood for the handles. It's most likely ayous.

I will PM you with prices.

Limba/Limba/ALC/WRC/ALC/Limba/Limba - 88.7g - 5.75mm - 1170Hz
Last week I had the chance to test this beauty for the first time.

At first I glued 2 sheets of the new Rasanter R53 on it (ultramax on forehand and 2,0 on backhand), but the over-all-feeling was a bit too hard (because the WRC core has a harder feeling compared to an ayous or kiri core and the R53 itself is also a hard rubber) and a bit too heavy (191g). Therefore I removed both rubbers and choosed a softer combination with Fastarc G-1 2,0 on forehand and Fastarc C-1 1,8 on backhand. This combination was a better option for me.

Although the feeling is still a bit harder (compared to IF ALC or HL5), I like the blade, because I had no problems from the beginning on. The direct feeling (although it is an Innerforce composition, the feeling is harder and more direct than a Viscaria for example) results in a good ball-placement, blocking is really easy and there is enough spin in the ball, especially on harder spin-shots.

Next week I will reduce the hardness of the rubbers once more, because I think soft(er) rubbers will fit really good to the blade. I don't plan to use extremely soft rubbers but medium-soft rubbers like Donic Bluestorm Bigslam could be a good option.

Thank you for your feedback Magic_M.

It's funny because that composition is the same as my personal blade and I find that mine has a soft feeling. Maybe the mistake is describing it as a soft feeling. The WRC core is very direct as you've stated, but it also gives a wonderful feedback in my opinion. But now I'm remembering that there is in fact one difference. The ALC fiber is different and I'm finding in my latest builds that it gives a slightly harder feeling to the blade than the previous one I was using. Maybe it explains the differences you've found.

There are not a lot of blades on the market with the core at 90 degrees. The only one I know is the Tibhar Lebesson, there could be others. So I wanted to try that. There are also not a lot of blades with Kevlar fiber, I wanted to try that too. For me this blade plays like a child of a Viscaria and a Long 5. Vislong? Locaria? I don't know, all I know is I like it very much.

Composition: Limba 0º/Kevlar/Limba 0º/Kiri 90º/Limba 0º/Kevlar/Limba 0º - 89.3g - 5.8mm - 1200 Hz
Headsize: 160x150mm

This was supposed to be a custom request but the customer changed his mind. I liked the ideia so I decided to build it anyway.

It's a popular composition koto/spruce/ayous, but made with hide glue. The result is a relatively fast but very solid 5 ply, no hollow feeling.

Composition: Koto/Spruce/Ayous/Spruce/Koto - 93g - 5.75mm - 1335 Hz
Headsize: 157x150mm
Handle: Flared, 100mm
Speed: Off-/Off

Unfortunately, things don't always go according to plan, but the ability to fix our mistakes is very important. Had a few setbacks with this build but I was able to save the blade and it plays very well.

What does Hz mean ?  Is this a scientific term like wood hardness or strength or something ?

How does it apply to my playing style ? Maybe high Hz is preferred for Offensive and low Hz for defensive ?  Or low Hz for blocking and high Hz for looping ? etc ?

Can I measure wood properties of my existing racket at home using some handheld widget or is it a leave it to professionals and expensive measurement equipment are needed ?  What I mean is , how would I know what Hz I need ?

Hz is the measured frequency of the blade and it's related to the stiffness. Generally a stiffer blade will be faster, but that assumption can only be made with two similar compositions because other variables also play their part.

There is a thread here somewhere that explains this pretty well. I also made some research using software modelling, that thread is over at TTD.

Yes, you can measure it easily with your smartphone. I use an app called advanced spectrum analyzer.

This was a very special request. The composition is similar to the M. Maze but with a thinner core and larger head size. But the handle was the biggest I've ever made, in fact it was the biggest handle I've ever seen on a TT blade!

Composition: Black Limba / Aramid-Carbon / Limba / Kiri / Limba / Aramid-Carbon / Black Limba
Thickness: 5.55 mm
Weight: 87.3g
Head size: 158x152mm
Handle: 112x31x27mm
Freq.: 1290 Hz

Since I probably won't be playing at my club for quite some time I might as well post my initial thoughts of the amazing blade Hipnotic made. First of all big thanks to Hipnotic, the entire process of ordering the blade was very pleasant and I would definitely recommend anyone on the forum looking for a custom blade to hit up Hipnotic. The quality, craftsmanship and looks of the blade he made me are absolutely stunning.

I have been using Xiom Vega X on the FH and Gewo Nanoflex FT40 on the BH. Unfortunately due to the ongoing pandemic I haven't been able to try the blade at my club yet. I have been using it on my outdoor table with my robot quite a bit in the last two weeks, also played my father a few times but only for a very short hit each time. Now the testing environment is not great due to the wind and not so great table but I have gotten quite an idea of how the blade plays especially comparing it to some of my other blades.

Lets start with the handle, the wenge/purpleheart combo looks gorgeous and it is the most comfortable one I've ever used. I had asked for it to be lowered 2mm which gives the blade it's bigger head while having a slightly smaller neck. I absolutely love that the chamfer near the rubber is so large, much larger than on any commercial blade and much more comfortable for my thumb but also my index finger on the backhand benefits from it. It just feels so much more natural than a handle with a shorter chamfer,  Not sure why no other manufacturer does this. There's also a second custom lens as shown in the picture, I still wanted the blade makers logo visible on my blade so I asked for both.
Now the speed, the frequency measures in at 1250 Hz. The blade feels only slightly faster than my Violin and about the same speed as my Violin carbon-inner. It has plenty of power away from the table though, on top of the carbon this has probably also to do with the slightly heavier weight compared to the rest of my blades (full setup is between 7-10g heavier than most of my other ones).
Control is very high, the blade has quite a bit of dwell time for a carbon blade and for me it's great in the short game. Both blocking and driving are incredibly stable, the sweetspot on this blade is absolutely massive. It obviously doesn't quite give the same feedback of an all wood blade but it's still very nice because it's pretty thin as well. It feels nice and soft on slower balls but when you start to put some power in the blade really starts to kick while still feeling very safe to hit harder with.
Spin is also very good on this blade, it seems pretty flexible because the spin I'm getting is quite high. This in combination with the dwell makes for a very pleasant experience when playing topspins.
The only thing that's a little strange for me is the arc of the ball when looping but only sometimes and it only really happens on the FH. It's quite unlike any setup I have played with, in general the quality of my shots is pretty good (for my standard at least) but sometimes it's completely random even if I think I hit the ball well. My shots always have a the spin I want to put in but occasionally the arc is either very high short or very low and it goes over the table. Can be very unpredictable at times. This is probably due to me not being completely used to the blade yet but I feel the Vega X is not the best combination with this blade so I might give another rubber a shot and see if that helps. It could also be because the sweetspot feels so large that when my shot is unpredictable I just didn't hit it in the right spot without me noticing. Not being able to play in a club setting has me only guessing though since the wind and table can affect the ball in some funny ways at times.

So once again thank you very much Hipnotic, really can't wait to test out the blade at my club but I'm afraid that might be a while.

A blade I made to test Western Red Cedar as a medial ply. The result is an All+ blade, very spiny and with a great feeling.

I've been making some experiments with Innegra S fiber. They call it the strongest man made fiber so I was curious about it's performance on TT blades. It feels very different to ALC, I can't wait to try it!

Structure: Limba / Innegra S - Carbon / Limba / Kiri / Limba / Innegra S - Carbon / Limba
Weight: 86.2g
Thickness: 5.8mm
Freq.: 1290 Hz

This is a blade I've made for a team mate with some interesting characteristics. It's inner fiber on one side and outer fiber on the other, with a larger head size. The fiber used was diolen-carbon. It's sold as blue Kevlar in many places but it's not. Diolen is a polyester fabric with higher impact and tear strength than fiberglass. It actually produces good results, feels similar to Aramid-Carbon but a little softer.

Structure: Limba / Diolen-carbon / Limba / Kiri / Diolen-carbon / Limba / Koto
Weight: 80g
Thickness: 5.6mm
Headsize : 158x152mm
Freq.: 1330 Hz

Freq.: 1440 Hz

This was one of the first blades I've built because I wanted to try a one ply blade. However, it was bullied and neglected for being overweight (112g!). But this blade wouldn't give up, so after a diet, a lot of exercise (and some cosmetic surgery) it managed to loose some weight. It's still a heavy blade, but with a slightly smaller head size the 100g don't seem much. I never played with a Hinoki 1 ply, but this blade is very fast yet soft and controllable, if they even better than this then I get what all the fuss is about.

That's still within conventional limits and shrunk used rubbers that other people can't play will fit Big smile. I just noticed your pictures are fantastic, we can copy them and paste them in an editor to zoom  from the starting 3352x3361 pixels high definition image, way to go!
What wood did you use for that one ply?

That was one of the reasons I decided to do it. I had a bunch of old rubbers that wouldn't fit on a standard head size but are perfect on this one. Also, it keeps the total weight close to 190g which is what I usually use anyways.

I use my old Nokia 950 for the photos. The phone is outdated but the camera is still pretty good even by today's standards.

The wood is Tola, I've bought a few years ago to make a guitar but never used it. Too bad the grain isn't perfectly vertical, it would make the blade feel even better.

Posted By: stiltt
Date Posted: 04/26/2020 at 12:49pm
I noticed the grain isn't vertical but in terms of playability I believe it's consistency that we need and in your blade, we have it so we're good. As a joke you could even say that you DID choose an oriented grain to have a forehand oriented blade and more control on the backhand Tongue

To tell the truth it doesn't matter much in this kind of wood. As you can see the growth rings are very perceivable, the wood is very homogeneous. If this were a Hinoki or Spruce blade it would be curling like a boosted rubber right now. Very nice idea, I should hire you has my marketing manager LOL

I've taken the opportunity to make a few experiments during this quarantine, this is one of them. A 3 ply blade with a concrete handle! Even my cat got curious

Did I fool ya? I guess not... Of course it's not concrete but it has a really nice texture, it would be great for those who are concerned about their slippery hands. Ah, this blade also has another dirty secret

Structure: Ayous / Douglas Fir / Ayous

Is this various glitters added to paint? that would be a very smart way to design a handle so we can use all kind of woods, maybe super light woods - balsa or cork - so we do not need to carve the handles and - maybe -get a better, truer feel?

Anyways, congratulations on your explorations and fine work, thanks for sharing.

There is this too!

expanding water blown polyurethane foams

This is my final candidate and the likeliest to be the answer.

Do we use one mold for for both sides of the handle or do we carve from a block with via cnc?

Thanks!

I haven't had the chance to try neither of the blades I made with Innegra S yet, however  I feel this is more of a supporting fiber. What I mean is that it doesn't take over the feeling of the whole blade like ALC or Carbon, it's a little more tamed. The sound is also very different.

This one of two blades I made for a forum member. It's inspired in the Timo Boll Spark, hence the very cool orange and grey handle.

Thickness: 5.45mm

More quarantine experiments.

I have to admit there was an inspiration in a certain recent Butterfly blade  I love the look of the Revoldia, so I wanted to make something similar without looking like a flat out copy. Composition wise it's also similar, except for the CNF layer, however I experimented with something I hope will give similar results.

Composition : Koto / Magic fairy dust / Ayous / Kiri / Ayous / Magic fairy dust / Koto
Weight: 88.2g
Thickness: 5.8mm
Freq. : 1270 Hz
Balance: 2.9cm (Low)

This was one of the blades I had the most fun building lately. Mostly because the client was very clinical during the whole process, which is a good thing, this is what "custom" means. So after a few back and forth emails we set on a composition similar to the W968, based on his playing style. But he also had a clear idea of what he wanted for the final weight, balance and frequency of the blade so it was an extra challenge to achieve that objective. The handle was inspired in the Harimoto blade and was projected to help with lowering the centre of gravity.

Composition : Black Limba / Ayous / Aramid-Carbon / Ayous / Aramid-Carbon / Ayous / Black Limba
Weight: 88.5g
Thickness: 5.95mm
Freq. : 1360 Hz
Balance: 2.2cm (Very Low)
