I now think that the majority of the shots (especially powerloops and short higher balls) should be diagonal to increase landing percentages. The straight line shots are much more difficult to land due to the shorter distances and should only be used as a variation. Something like a 80-20 split. I used to play straight line more often than diagonal because it looked cool but when I counted the mistakes it actually did more damage than good lol. 

Even for diagonal shots, you can vary how wide the shot becomes...

You can also wrap around the ball more nicely with diagonal shots so that would increase percentages even further.

Definitely moving angles and placement are key.
