| take a 5 ply and 7 ply blade made of more or less the same wood or wood/fiber material etc.. What is the difference between these 2 blades? I would assume the 7 ply is stiffer with more speed. What tends to be the other differences. I've only ever played with 5 ply blades so im curious as im thinking about getting a particular blade which is 7 ply. |

A 7-ply is heavier and faster, typically favoured by players with a weaker far table game.

Typically 5ply all-wood blades have a thicker core; but a 7ply usually has a core of 3 thinner plies. It is likely that the thicker core would give a 5ply more power, away from the table. (assuming that the overall thickness of a 5ply and 7ply being the same).

We have a topic about this on the French forum and what came out mostly was that 7 plys were often thicker, stiffer and faster. But even if the 7 plys are faster they require more efforts to get the most speed out of it. 7 plys better for blocking and smashing because stiffer and 5 plys better for spinny top spin because they have more felx. Quite a few also felt that 7 plys were better for short game because less bouncy in that kind of game. Would you say a 5ply is faster than a 7ply with same type(s) of wood and same overall thickness? With overall thickness being the same, 5ply will have a thicker core, but the 7ply will have a thinner core. ------------- Yasaka Galaxya Butterfly Amultart SI |

Do you mean the page with the illustration of 1st and 2nd speed? You can see the Chinese use this term sometimes, Xu Xin with his Rosewood V is a good example of a guy who goes for slower 1st speed & faster 2nd speed, with the high spin kicking the ball when it hits the table. But I think something has been lost in the translation on these pages, they show what looks like a typical 5 ply construction with the text "short touch time, fast 1st speed." Also, I have shopped several Sanwei blades on aliexpress and I have seen their advertisements. You should know that the third illustration (the 9 ply with "integrated function" and "all attack") is just promotion for their "domino" structure which they claim is better than traditional construction types used by Galaxy, DHS and so on.
