    Posted: 01/15/2009 at 12:23am

What is the opinion of others about sealing the handle with polyurethane while sealing the blade surfaces?

Up to now, I have left handles on my blades unsealed.  I've thought about sealing the handle (to keep them looking a bit better), but heard that others found it too slippery.  Would it make a difference for slip if I'm using satin poly-u (Minwax wipe-on), instead of gloss poly-u?

In the 07-08 Donic catalog it says 'Handles which are not lacquered are naturally more sweat absorbing'.  Does Donic actually selling blades that have lacquered handles?

Thanks!

Protects, but makes it slippery. I seal along the edge of the blade down to the bottom of the handle, but not the two main halves of the handle itself.

I sealed a couple of my blades' handles with i-sure and donic sealers. Doesn't make them slippery when in play. One is FL the other ST.

I don't think it will be slippery unless it is heavily sealed.

Pending on what you use to seal, and how many layers will determine if it will be slippery.  I seal my handles on blades that I use without grip.  I had 1 blade I used for about 5 months with out grip or seal job on handle.  The blade gained a few grams of sweat after so long, so I seal the handles lightly.

Miniwax has a water based (polyurethane) that I've sealed a handle with. I did about 4 coats with sanding in between. It seems slicker than non-sealed wood, but its not really slippery.

The Acoustic that I am using was sold to me with the handle sealed with something and it actually got sticky as my hand started sweating.  If you twiddle, a sticky handle is a pain.  Use your discretion when trying to decide to seal the handle or not.  Ask yourself what exactly are you trying to gain from sealing the handle.  Is that gain worth the potential risk of an unsafe or unplayable blade?

Not sure why you would say it would be Unsafe?

There are such a things as sand paper and solvents for removal if it is a prob.

IMO any type of slickness on the handle poses an increased potential for the blade becoming a flying object.  Wood in its natural state will absorb some hand sweat thus reducing the potential for the handle becoming too slick to hold on to whilst swinging.

And true the sealer could be removed, but like I said he should ask himself what does he really want to seal the handle for anyway?  Maintaining the aesthetics? Prevention of splinters in your hand?  Increasing resale value?

All of the answers to these questions seem shallow, unrealistic, or subjective to me in comparison to the increased potential of creating an unsafe or unplayable blade and if in the end he has to remove the sealer, what does that process wind up doing to the handle?

In my case after removing the sealer, I was left with a slightly thinner handle, a slightly more raised handle label, and some sand paper marks on the label, and un-removable sealer near the blade face and handle joint.

I use water based blade protector. I put a layer on the handle also. May be my hand has some problem, I dont see the protective layer after a while. The blade that I use has a balsa handle. After holding it for a while, it gets so smooth and I feel it is slippery - super slippery. Now I have to use overgrip (cotton) to have a grip on the handle. In a fast rally when I manuever the blade, this has caused me problems - the blade does not turn the way I want.

Thanks for all the info everyone...

Based on the replies, I don't think I will be sealing the handle.

I just thought maybe there was some more incentive to seal the grip than just making the grip look newer longer...like maybe some people had experienced split handles or wood-rot from not sealing the handle

Thanks again,

I don't seal my ST handle since if it's slippery it will fly over to my opponent LOL. But I seal lightly my FL handle blades, since FL handle blades is more firmly grip by hand unlike ST handle.

I've once sealed my ST handle Blades with Donic water base sealer, found it too slippery even just holding it. Luckily I can remove the seal with Parrafin oil. I wipe it continously with parafin oil and a piece of cloth until it feels hot. The water base seal comes off easily without sanding it with sand paper. My ST handle looks as good as before I seal it Tongue
