    Posted: 11/09/2006 at 11:27pm
I finally got my camera working again. After the last video I made and posted the camera I had stopped working completely. So here is a video of me playing against my brother. I am the one in the blue and yellow shirt.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GWYUKE1Q

I know that I still am not crouching enough and I am pushing through too much with my body when I loop.
Any advice welcome.

Hey Lion,

A few suggestions:
1. When hiding the ball to decide who serves, your form was all wrong (just kidding ).
2. You need a larger loop stroke; wind up your arm further back, and follow through a lot more.
3. For short serves to your forehand, if you're not absolutely sure they'll fall off the table for you to loop, make sure to step in and play them early.
4. Vary your serve more. 99% of the time you used the same forehand serve. Vary spins, location (short, long, heavy spin, light spin, no spin, both sides, slow, fast)

I like your brother's serve, how he jerks the racket back after contact; it's a pretty good deception to hide the spin. Next step is to actually use different spins so as to exploit the deception.

That's a nice room you play in btw, just gotta get those mattresses out of the way.

Technically the shed is the storage shed, so we have to put up with what is in there.

Thanks for the advice. My older brother (my opponent is my younger brother) keeps telling me that I am too predictable, in service and in general play.

Even though you are predictable, your brother did not have the skills necessary to exploit it. If your brother wants to backhand everything, he should stand more middle. You lost alot of points on trying to loop his service. You could try to fast push his service short, or push long into his forehand corner. Your looping lanes seem to be the middle of the table and backhand corner which is ok to play unless someone's backhand is much stronger than their forehand. Couple of times you could of won the point if you just block the ball back because you were too slow to step around and loop.

I would say the guy in the dark shirt about 1100 and the other guy perhaps 1250-1300.

Hard to tell from video as things normally look worse so they could be a little higher

Wow, 1250-1300. After some of the videos of people who are heaps better than me have been rated at 1500, I was expecting something less than 1000.

So shot selection is another area I can work on, as well as placement.

I just looked again and yes I think he could compete with the average 1200 players, perhaps I was a bit generous about the kid in the dark shirt

Lion your best shot is your BH it seems like it comes easy to you and your pretty consistant with it,your FH needs faster handspeed and maybe a softer rubber would work better and you also need to work on serves as you seem to only have 1 or 2 serves.

I'd say they're around 1000-1100. That best kids I saw competing in the US Open in U800 didn't have the looping power of these guys. It's low looping power, but once you get the stroke down and can swing it your hardest, it'll be pretty good.

Lol, this is why I didn't ask about what US rating I would have, its always an argument.
Thanks for the advice. I think you've pinpointed the biggest problems I have to deal with. I'll continue training and in a couple of weeks I might make another video.

I'm just wondering what video editing program you used. I like how you took out everything in between points (getting the ball, etc) and also how the score was on the screen all the time. I have some home movies and I would like to edit them like you did.

It seems like you have a good place to play.  Is the table homemade?

I have a couple tips for your brother in black.  I notice he needs to use his legs more to come up on his topspin balls.  He should go down and come up (with his legs) as he hits the ball.

Secondly, he should always go forward when hitting the ball.  I noticed several times he is backing away as he hits.

Thanks Robert, I'll pass them on, I'm sure he will appreciate the advice.

dshaggy1717, it is a home made table. We couldn't get a half table piece so it is made up of three strips. Unfortunately there is a slight ridge 2/3 of the way up both sides of the table. They don't usually get hit but every so often they do.

I used pinnacle studio 9. I marked the original video where the points started and finished. I removed all of the other pieces. Then I inserted titles for the start of each game, and added an overlay title to each point containing the score, and expanded each one so that it covered the whole point. Then I waited for a few hours while it rendered the video.
