I just felt obligated to share this amazing table tennis match with the rest of the MyTT community, as a person who started this sport with great veneration towards the incredible defender Joo Se Hyuk, this video truly blows my mind away.

Many thanks to ttCrawsaive for the upload.

I've seen this, a great match between two of the world's finest! Joo was at his peak (2003 WTTC Finals) and Kong was playing one of the best matches of his life. Very exciting match, excellent rallies, the crowd was wild! Thanks!

Young Joo was scary... I feel bad for him that he didn't win it all and Schlager beat him.

Joo is really a god when it comes to choppers + LPs. So consistent and he has a perfect balance of defense + offense.

It will be a sad day when Joo retires... I really don't see another chopper making it into the top 10...

Awesome match! Thank you for the link!

Because modern defenders have at least 2x as much to practice as modern attackers (in terms of strokes and tactics), it's no wonder that we don't see too many in the top 10 (or top 100 even) at any given point.

If the ITTF was truly smart, the rule changes would make defense more viable - because matches like this are truly epic. And anyone, regardless of sport background can appreciate the spectacle of these types of rallies.

Here is the whole match - it is erroneously marked as a SF of WTTC 2003 but as we all know (right?) KLH didn't play JSH in Paris - KLH lost his semi to Schlager and JSH beat Kreanga in his semifinal. Enjoy!

Correction, it was Ma lin not Kreanga that JSH defeated in SF.

Yeah, JSH beat Ma Lin in the QUARTERS and Kreanga in the SEMIS. Does anyone know what stage was this match of the 2003 China Open? Was it the semis or quarters or what?

I wouldn't want to see JSH retire Ouch Can't believe he's already 30 and he's older than Ryu Seung Min who I thought was like 32  ! ( JSH looks like he's 25 or so... ). No rising modern defender yet, in top 100 maybe, in top 10 quite impossible. Some might be capable of but they have to work so hard and really determine to reach that goal which in this case is very rare because they know there's a shorter way to reach there that is to play offensive. We need someone that really loves the defensive style...

Based on the site JimT provided for us,

Quarters: Peter Karlsson, Oh Sang Eun, Chen Qi, and Kong Linghui all lost to the soon-to-be semifinalists (below)

Semis: RSM vs. Wang Hao/ Ma Lin vs. WLQ

Finals: Ma Lin over Wang Hao

bbkon: Seriously? That sucks, but it very well might be true since Kong was swinging like a madman against the Korean chopper! haha

Yes, it was the China Open 2003 in September. The WTTC in Paris was some months before, in May 2003.
