When you serve, your non playing hand will throw the ball. Do you throw that ball with your wrist, forearm or big arm? I saw lots of pro youngsters now throw the ball with hand nearly straight and toward their body. Why is this so? They throw with their big arm! Is it for consistency?

I use my whole arm for a higher toss, but forearm only for a lower 6" toss. My higher tosses seem to be more consistent in the relation of how far away the ball is from my body at contact. Forearm only tends to move the ball in towards my body, instead of the straight up/down movement.

I think the new stricter "vertical toss" rule has caused some changes. You used to be able to hold the ball way out and in front of you and then toss it back and towards you. Now, if you are going to hit the ball in the same position (relative to your body) you have to start the toss closer to your body and farther back from the table in order to maintain a "vertical" toss. Lots of the pros still get away with what should be called illegal when it comes to sideways and back tosses that don't meet the "vertical" requirement.

I read an article on this a while back.
The toss can't be done with wrist because wrist bends and you will always throw the ball in different directions. That's why the proper technique for a high toss is to throw the ball up with an arm and keep the wrist flat. This is very easy to do once you're used to opening your wrist up and letting the ball rest there a couple seconds before executing the serve. Make sure to put the ball in the middle of the palm, not on fingers, as the fingers may bend as you move arm up. So the answer is yes, for consistency. |
