hi guys, i recently played a match with an old guy at our aging club.
uh heres the thing. he serves fh tomahawk, but doesnt throw it up rlly high or anything. and the thing is, he serves no spin and backspin in a VERY VERY VERY similar motion. i try to look at the bounce of the ball but sometimes its too quick. any help needed plz? btw, i know some state players also do this on their fh pendulum, what advice can u give for when 'knowing' of its no spin or backspin? thx alot guys, no wonder ive been popping up soo much. |

check the movement and angle of the bat, whether its open or closed. a backhand serve tends to be a bit more open plus the movement is more 'exagerated'
if you get too distracted trying to figure out whether the spin exists, you can just slice it back. got chop, slice, no chop, slice. it probably loses you the chance of smashing the ball back and winning the point, but it'll probably be safer. |

pay attention to contact point especially if he uses the same motion. I agree that you need to watch for racket angle as well. Watch if the ball contacts the paddle close to the edge or close to the handle. There is different torque generated by the wrist motion which will lead to different amount of spin. Hope that helps.

well technically if u make contact with the edge of the blade u get
more spin, and if u make contact near the handle its less spin.

For no-spin serves, you should be able to see the ball's label as it comes toward you. If it's underspin, you won't see the label. |

I just look at the ball, once you play enough you'll know if its backspin or no-spin.

balls with backspin and nospin will behave differently when they contact the table surface. backspin will sort of 'slide' and 'glide' across the table. no spin serve will shoot straight at you at constant speed
