When making your own custom paddle, what is everyone using to finish the handle? Poly, Varnish, Danish Oil?

Thanks

If you use the right kind of wood you don't need any finish at all

Please let me know if I can be of assistance.

Hi Cole, I am using Zebra wood and the sanded wood looks muted.  I want the grain to pop.  Maybe a light mist of Lacquer?  That is what I used on the face of the paddle.

Thanks,
Ara

I refinished a Ross Leidy blade handle. After a light sanding, Ross told me to use Minwax Wipe On Poly in Clear Satin. 3-4 light coats. It came out really nice. Not slippery for me.

Wipe On poly makes the handle feel plasticky to me. Danish Oil is my go-to finish for handles but give it a week to dry before it stops smelly a bit fishy.

I liked the idea of Danish Oil.  The Finish is absorbed into the wood.  You can still feel the wood surface.  The Wipe on Poly  builds up on the surface of the wood.  But is if Wipe on Poly is what Ross uses, those are some beautiful blades. This is a blade I built for fun.  Maybe I will put Danish Oil on one side, and Wipe on Poly on the other and see how they feel.  I have Danish Oil.  I will have to purchase some Wipe on Poly.  Thanks,

The minwax poly spray can is more viscous and would better sink into the wood and leave the outside less slick. it has the texture of wd40 going in

that wipe-on poly goes on a lot thicker

first one is raw wood and the second is with Danish oil.  Wipe on Poly on its way from Amazon.
Thanks for the help.

Nice blade! Looks like a Hock.  Is there a reason why you chose the grain to be diagonal?

For finish on the handle (and blade too), try boiled linseed oil.

This is the side I did with Wipe on Poly.  The Wipe on Poly goes on thinner than regular Polyurethane. It does fill a little more slick than the Danish oil.  But is also a fine finish for blade handles.  It will come down to preference. I like the feel on the Danish Oil a little more.
