The Ovtcharov-like grunting on soft pushes. is ridiculous The referees should give a yellow card for unsportsman-like conduct...

Grunting by my opponent in general makes me miss a lot so I have always wanted to do it on demand on all my strokes but haven t practiced it. I personally think it should be banned but of course, people don t want new rules and Primorac was a stud.

I grunt if it comes out naturally, like if I m stretching to get a ball or really contorting myself, but I ve never really enjoyed rhythm based grunting. I get it, but I don t enjoy it when it s Dima excessive or now Omar excessive.

Although, for some reason I liked it a lot when Dima and Mizutani played each other and had a grunting match.

And I ve basically stopped watching tennis because the shrieking drives me nuts.  There is no physiological reason why it s necessary to grunt or shriek on every shot.  It s a learnt behaviour and umpires should have the right to call it as distracting.

However, I can t see any rules which pertain to "unsporting conduct".  The only thing that I think could be applied is this
Quote 2.9  A LET

2.9.1  The rally shall be a let:

2.9.1.3  if failure to make a service or a return or otherwise to comply with the Laws is due to a disturbance outside the control of the player;

And this would only apply if it was deemed that the grunting was "a disturbance outside the control of the player" being grunted at.

I like this a lot - I find it pretty frustrating when people suddenly grunt when doing a shot and it throws off my timing.  Either you grunt on every shot or you don t do it at all.

If he can do what he is doing, then I think it may force people to address this problem once and for all.  What I find even better about his grunt is that it actually happens after he has hit the ball!

Maybe he does it to mess with his opponent.
Excessive grunting shouldn t be allowed; excessive anything shouldn t be allowed.
I know a few players who stomp on everything. including blocks. Why in the world would you stomp on a block.

He s holding his breath on very strike, that s why the grunts come afterward.  I sometime holding my breath going after a loose ball hard, and make some grunting, most of the time it s not even audible, but I do see why some player grunt.

Most grunting is timing related.  But that s not the point.  Grunt in your head if that s so important.  It s a noise that clearly makes it harder to read spin from contact sound and also makes it harder to concentrate during the point.  More so if the opponent does it inconsistently with little logic other than he feels the need to do so on a particular shot at a particular time.

I think this rule would apply:

3.05.02.01 Players and coaches or other advisers shall refrain from behaviour that may unfairly affect an opponent, offend spectators or bring the sport into disrepute, such as abusive language, deliberately breaking the ball or hitting it out of the playing area, kicking the table or surrounds and disrespect of match officials.

Yes.  And grunting on a serve is.......     I can t find the right word.  It needs to be subtle, sarcastic, and insulting.  Somebody help me here.

Agreed.  I think the umpires are perfectly within their right to penalize excessive grunting, if they so choose.

There was actually a controversy in this match around the 4:40 mark, where Hazinski stomps his foot quite loudly as Huang goes to smash.  The umpre calls a let and stops play, although I m unable to tell if he actually awarded Huang with the point.. which  would be quite strange if he didn t.

At any rate, umpires do have and should have the ability to penalize this type of distracting behavior at their discretion.  It s not like I should be able to whip out a flashlight and shine it in my opponent s eyes right as he goes to hit the ball.

Callous?.... actually that s more useful to describe someone who is stomping on an opponent s smash.

Grunting on a serve is eh, not a big deal. Just funny looking imo. Exaggerated super loud choing after every point is worse I think.

I think if you hold your breath on a shot you tense up your upper body and somewhat limit movement.

I ve been trying to breath out through the shot on loops/drives and its been helping me stay relaxed but causes me to grunt a bit. It does sound annoying from a 3rd POV but whatever helps I guess.

I didn t feel his grunting was excessive - a la Sharpova or Azerenka.
But what a spectacular match. I say again French TT has to be the most entertaining brand of TT!
