In my opinion MaLin #2 is a side spin serve. Wang returns with a top spin with some good amount of side spin in it. The side spin being not necessarily to trick the opponent but to compensate for the sidespin that was already on the ball from Ma.
The serve, in effect, is very similar to one of the WLQ's favourite serves (jee, it's too hard to describe which one I have in mind, but I love it). Just the action looks totally different as they use different grips.
shij421, you kick some pretty serious a$$ with these gifs, thanks!

Actually I have a backup of that 53 MB page somewhere in my archives (I did not want to load all those 53MB each time I wanted to study a serve). I could host the gifs on my online space and edit all the posts (no change in what we see...). what do you think shij?

Nice thanks :D I can play around and experiment my service, I love the #14 it has a short spin, almost a dead ball, good for players who love to drive after a short spin serve, if not the ball will go long and you can play the next ball for offensive move :D

Stared at these for a while at work. Simply awesome and informative. I would particularly love to see some Zhang Jike slow-mo serves.

Aren't these enough for you? If you master these serves, you will have no problem beating opponents much better than you. You know what they say, if your serve is powerful and is good placed, you've almost won the point.

this thread is part of shij421's legacy on this forum in addition of others (I am thinking of the interview of Borko) and the long moderating time he has given. I am the one hosting all the gifs in the thread right now (since it was so popular, the free photobucket account refused to keep giving bandwidth for them); a few days before photobucket nixed the gifs I had saved them all on my hard drive to avoid downloading all the time (about 60MB) so we got lucky...

I don't know if you guys notice this, but when top players serve short, they move their paddle in a U shape (especially xu xin), meaning they draw back the bat right after contact with the ball. I've also noticed that their short serves' first bounce is usually near the edge of the table (which is usually for longer serves).

Man classic post from shij - good forum memories right there!
shinimai you're right, if you can read the first bounce you'll know a lot about the depth of the serve you're facing, a short first bounce is going to be very short.
At my level at least, a short serve better have a good bit of underspin or it's probably dead and can be blasted at will anywhere - super short topspin serves are rare - and the underspin is easy to spot. If you're serving short keep it low or pay the price.
Among the pros, "half long" serves that bounce twice or are otherwise close to the edge will have a first bounce closer to the servers end line but become harder to attack. A weak opening against a half-long ball creates an opportunity: an attackable ball at an ideally predictable location that can be put away.
