I guess it all depends on where you are standing. If you are standing too close step back. If you are standing too far away step closer....

After 2 years of training by a coach from Beijing, he finally said these to me:
1. Use your leg to find the ball 2. Use your leg to hit the ball 3. Compact the arm/body movement (legs not included) during each swing. |

Tagging along on what your coach said, I was once told by a high level coach in Europe that "Table tennis is game of head by using your legs" (I'm not sure the translation into English came out as well as the original) Edited by VictorK - 12/22/2014 at 12:06pm |

Nice, did the coach mention anything about timing and rhythm of the strokes?

Used to but hardly anymore. To elaborate further: 1. Using legs to find the ball. This is nothing new but just a different saying of getting into right position to execute the swing. To do that, the footwork must be fast. 2. Using the legs to hit the ball. This is interesting. After 2 solid years of training, practising the basic swing technique and getting it into the muscle memory, I was told to stop any arm movement and reduce the torso/waist movement as much as 70%. Use the leg as the main tool for power and even the swing itself. To increase the spin, just use the wrist. 3. Compact the movement of arm/body. No unnecessary motion. Do not mimic all those fantastic looking swings by those top CN players. The lesser the motion, the faster you are ready for the return shot. |

That is actually a really good tips, I have many times had problem with trying to kill the ball to early and ending up losing matches without letting the opponent make his own points..

If the paddle is still accelerating it hasn't reached its maximum speed yet. I have posted the formulas for speed after impact. Acceleration isn't part of the formula. Even if you added an acceleration term its effects would be very small. If you think acceleration will increase the dwell time it will, but not in any significant way. The acceleration of the blade would need to be very fast. Faster than what people can accelerate the blade. My coach tells me to keep my strokes short by just bending at the elbow and wrist. To reach the the best paddle speed the acceleration needs to be fast but the paddle needs to be at the correct speed and the acceleration 0 when contact is made. Other tips. More spin, less speed. Wait for it. Do hit too early. Move then hit. Don't reach. Stop admiring my last shot and get back into position. |

Taking TT advice too literally is sometimes a player's death sentence. As Baal pointed out, sometimes the advice is intended to help you over-compensate for a technical flaw so that you get an idea of what is possible and move towards the ideal technique. And sometimes the advice isn't done justice by the short summary.
---------------------- Play the game from the inside out Make him work for his food. |

always see red when using forehand. always see black when using backhand. (if your forehand if black and backhand is red)
if you see the color of the opposite side then your stroke is severely messed up.

4 years later and the advice is the still the same as above.
There have been improvements like keeping my elbow fixed, timing and being better able to respond to balls anywhere by keeping lower motions smaller, more efficient. However, the lower part is killing my legs and back. There is some advice that makes no sense but I smile and keep going. My practice partner has lesson right after me. Now we can know what we are doing wrong and can tell each other. It is just hard to always do thing right when the other guys is looping balls at you from close to the table. One good thing that helps is that I can now better recognize flaws in other peoples strokes and know how to take advantage of them. |

http://mobsea.co/stretching/img/Raised-Leg_Knee_Ankle_Shoulder_and_Back_Stretch.jpg I mostly focus on this one, it's important that you are holding at least 30 seconds and that you really pushing yourself even though it hurts, especially in the beginning. This have really helped me with my footwork and also mitigated my lower back pains.

Probably, the best advice should be this:

Had my first coaching session 3 weeks ago after self-learning for a few years. That was the first thing the coach said to me.

"Soft!" "Go point by pont" "Whe you smash, you have to really smash the ball and place it in the exact point of the table, where even the umpire can't see it. I want him to say: "I didn't see it" (sitting into umpire's chair and putting on a dump's face).
