Any reviews on these blades?
What's the deal w/ the extra piece of cork on the cpen handle? How does it compare with some other 1 ply blades like the Darker JSpeed 90? |

Well, I have just posted a reference to the 1-ply from M.I.T.
http://www.ping-pong.tw/product_info.php?cPath=24_127&products_id=2762 So I am certainly interested to know any additional info. Too bad they are not actually made at M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) - since this is my town (Boston) I could have come right into the production facility and try them |

Your post is the reason why I created this one :)
There's at least 1 forum member who uses an MIT blade.

Well, I'm not very good at reviews, especially if I like the thing to be reviewed Maybe some questions would help...
OK, here the basics: the RPB TL blade pictured at ping-pong.tw is mine, so this is how it exactly looks like without rubbers and dings. Weight is about 80g, so it's really prepared to carry two rubbers. It's very well balanced so even when I put 999 Nat with T05 it doesn't feel too heavy. Classic Cpen handle is comfortabe and the Jpen-like "hook" is very handy to have - it prevents the paddle to fly away when RPBing. The wood feels harder than Kiso Hinoki, but it's a plus for me because I use it for short pips primarily, and some bit of hardness could be added because I sealed it remembering splinters on my Cypress-S. The blade pairs nicely with virtually any rubber including capricious Thors and all kinds of pips (SP, MP and LP). I'm saying this after trying Tin Arc, TA3, Globe 999 National, Thors, T05, T05fx, 802, 802-40, Haifu Dolphin, 563, Globe 888, DHS Cloud and Fog III, Grass DTecS 1.2... Maybe something else, don't recall. Control is very very good, speed is very decent, spin is great. Hitting with pips is very precise, I miss only because of lack of proper technique. I would rate it as OFF- So, all in all it's a great blade for great price, definitely worth to try, to play and to have in collection. |

Ok, some questions:
Is the hook made of cork? Have you tried the Darker JSpeed 90 and if so can you compare the 2 on speed, and feel? Do you know the different between the RPB TL and the RPB CL? Based on the picture it looks like a different handle and hook. How are the grains? Are they very close together or spread out? |

Yes, the hook is made of cork.
No, I didn't try any Darker blade because they are a bit pricey for me now. Maybe later and just for collection - should I change to play with something else, it would be something custom and more powerful, I guess (like 9.5-10mm WRC from AmHinoki) as I don't think that extra 0.3 mm on Darker's blades would add significant amount of power. I only see the handle shapes are different on CL and TL too. Well, you can see the grains of my blade on ping-pong.tw - to me, they are close, but not that close as on some exclusive 1-pliers...

Does anyone know where this factory is in Taiwan. Since I go to Taiwan about once a year, I'd love to see if I can visit the factory.

Since I am hinoki addicted, I bought this one. Here are the pics:
The wood is harder than usual darker speed 90 has (most of them are too soft for me) but it is softer than darker 3maigouban blade. It is little bit softer than Bishu no1, with higher throw and longer trajectory.

Mine arrived yesterday. The grains look great.
I sealed it last night and put rubbers on this morning - Acuda S3 Max on FH and Energy Xtra 2.0 on BH. I didn't have a lot of time to play (lunch break) but this is how I find it compares with JSpeed 90: Not as thick, but slightly larger. It felt much lighter as well (I don't have a scale). The rubbers are different (S3 vs Vega Elite), but it was noticeably slower. I was surprised at the difference in speed. This helped keep my serves shorter and spinnier, and helped my push but required more oomph for loops, drives, etc. I liked the hook because it gave me the impression that I could really let my wrist fly w/out worrying about losing the paddle in the process - this allowed me to create more spin which is always a plus for me. Things that I noticed because of the blade: I usually don't hold the blade nearly as high. Holding it higher (to wrap my fingers around the hook properly) changed the angle of my bat in a very undesirable way - more open on the FH and more closed on the BH. Now I know what the Super Cpen guy was talking about. It's not something I want to change, so I'm going to have to file down the cork a bit to make it more comfortable for my normal grip.

I got my MIT Cpen blade. The 1-ply cypress is very nice grain. Mine was 8.4mm thick and 79g, not 8.2mm like it says on the website. I had to cut about 3mm off the cork hook, as it is too deep. Now it is perfect.
Preliminary impressions is that this wood gives clearer feel than kiso hinoki, but not as soft. It is less dense than most kiso hinoki yet a little harder. Still on the soft side, though. It is pretty fast, solid OFF-. But I am using HexerHD which is just about the fastest rubber out there, so I may be biased. The setup is very fast. This is a really nice blade. I am sure the price will go up considerably considering its quality. The cork hook is a nice plus for a cpen player and more cpen blades should have something like this. 1-ply blades don't have big sweetspots. I don't care though, I always hit it in the center when I am in position.

I got my CPEN RPB and the 1 ply ST:
Good quality blade, definitely need sanding on the neck for the cpen. I cut and grind the cork about 2mm.
My cpen is exactly 80 gr, the ST is 91.5.
One thing I notice right away is that they are bigger than normal blades, about 2 mm wider, 1 mm longer than my avalox. This means I can't transfer my rubbers without leaving gap
Sealing them now, waiting to try them hopefully soon.
Tomorrow I am hoping to be able to borrow my friend's JPEN and grind my cpen some more. Something about the cork and neck doesn't feel natural/right, even after I sanded it down Edited by dual700 - 11/23/2011 at 2:16am |

You probably need to shave off the cork more than just 2mm, and the neck needs some significant shaving as well.

MIT is definitely softer, a tad slower, wood isn't as dense as JUIC. Juic has sharper "ping" when you bounce the ball on the naked blade. Nevertheless, MIT is a rocket with slightly dwell time. I like it a lot.

I think the extra piece of cork is for better grip especially for those Jpen --> Cpen players who get used with their index finger support by the cork.

Dang I just ordered a MIT Cypress Shake Blade in Flare to test with. Compare it to my American Hinoki WRC 10mm I wouldn't mind getting a 2nd hand Darker Speed 90 10mm flare or a Kokutaku Bishu no 1 Specialist Shake hand in 10mm But doesn't seem like I can get any of these anywhere these days... *sighs* maktime |

bishu no 1 specialist in 10mm? I thing original specification was 8.5mm, my bishu has 9mm. And my MIT blade is very similar to bishu. It has slightly higher and longer trajectory and I can feel some vibrations. I decided not to buy another Bishu, MIT can do similar job for me.
The thing about my bishu is that the harder I hit, the higher control. MIT does not provide such feature (darker speed 90 neither). But still difference between MIT and bishu is small and well acceptable for me. Good spare blade. Great price.Little bit heavier, 94g..

Yea I've seen it at TT Japan and Iruiru as 8.5mm where did you get your 9mm version? So the MIT Cypress is quite similar to the KKT Bishu... hmmm interesting I've ordered a flare shake version of the MIT Will be interesting how it plays and will give me a good chance to compare with my WRC. Which has excellent control as well and like your KKT Bishu the harder I hit / the faster I stroke the ball the more control, spin and power comes through. This is my firs week with the WRC and rubbers setup and I'm loving it. My previous setup was a Giant Dragon Super Balsa 2 with Hexer Powersponge and Womans Plasma. |
