My 10 year old son Alex was playing at a country-wide tournament last Saturday and I recorded some video.
He is learning TT for about a year and started playing with short pips this September. He likes the style very much despite many people around are saying that he must play shakehand (he actually can play shakehand for fun, but he thinks that it's too obvious). So, I'm posting two matches here, any advises and opinions are welcome. He is the penholder at the table number 6 His setup: BTY Primo Vitesse CS, FH: Palio Flying Dragon, BH: Palio Blitz 47.5deg 2.0mm

Well, I don't think it's too fast. It's marked as an OFF+, but it's slow as OFF-, definitely not faster than my Donic WSC... Yasaka Extra is too flexy for short pips, I have no idea about Stiga Off yet. But from my feeling the entire setup is not too fast for Alex because he handles it well when he's concentrated and performs proper footwork and swing.
Mine chos after each point he wins, I'm fighting with it, but the most success was to make it not too loud on non-key points. It's Moldova, many people are still speaking Russian here. |

Palio Blitz 47.5deg
too hard for little boy..
just too difficult to generate spin.
Personally, I don't recommand pips.
it might gain some advantage in beginning, but will very hard when get into high level.

Согласен I agree. I think that it's actually good that I didn't make the angle more narrow so it's possible to see how other kids play. |

I think Clipper would be way too fast and Dipper would be too heavy for him. So far, it's nearly the best setup for him as I see it. The only thing I really want to change is the BH rubber because I too think it's really too hard for him, so I think of 42deg Blitz 2.0 or maybe something more thinner - I discovered that Tibhar Genius 1.8 I got from my friend is a very nice RPB rubber...

Tibhar Patrik Chila is light and fast. Its carbon upgrade is even faster.
Not to mention T-11 with its 65 g and Off++

I tend to agree, but when his wrist goes explosive, he already generates tons of spin by his RPB. Probably, I'll go both ways - change to a softer rubber and work on his wrist explosiveness.
Oh well. I believe that Short Pips are better in the early stages and it'll be much easier to switch to inverted whenever he wants to (in fact, I already see that his touch and loops with inverted rubbers hugely progressed when he switches to shakehand). SP don't give any real advantages at that level, only problems when no proper technique is developed - they don't produce weird balls and it's more difficult to generate spin with them than with inverted. I guess you are talking about Long Pips which is not the case here.

man, how I wish this was the table tennis culture in the U.S.
All of my life I had a table in my basement and prided myself on beating my best friend... years later I learned we were both noobs without the slightest clue

И pipfacts.info. Удачи! Finally, I see the first comment about his play Thank you! Pips are really good playing pehnold close to table. They are simply made for each other - I found it myself when put my kid's short pips onto my blade just for fun. Now, I play both looping and hitting techniques (using twiddling) and probably will propose the same practice to my son - I found it a bit disturbing for opponents if not heavily overused Xiom Vega Euro is very close to Blitz - probably the 42deg version, I will check it. About SP penhold, I would recommend you to look at the OOAK forum - there is a video section with basic tutorials there. Also, take a look at pipfacts.info. Good luck!

Oh, I didn't know that, thanks for the info! I'm constantly telling my son's coach that it won't be a problem at all to him to go inverted, but if he wants to learn something more complex - that would be an advantage. IMO, playing with short pips requires better footwork, better feel of the racket, more work on spinnig the ball, better use of placement and deception comparing to inverted.
