On the front end, this appeared to be a great idea.

I heard that less than 20 teams actually entered, not sure if correct.

A lot of hard work and planning went into that with great intentions.

What kind of discussion or study could have been done to predict that ?

Maybe the solution there, have quad meets like track, where all the competing teams and clubs meet at one location for a closed like tournament and take turns hosting.

I guess then it's just like the various team tournaments we already have except the teams represent clubs and regions.

Actually I wish it could work but we need an insanely rich investor who thinks he could make money off it.

A league in a place like Belgium or Netherlands is easier to pull off!

Little $$$, long trips, duh.

Note that one of the people on the advisory board was Dave Del Vecchio, he also runs the LA local USATT league - LATTF, which I played in for several years. Some of the issues are the same.

LATTF hit a peak with about 7 divisions and slowly lost teams after start up. Most of the higher level players aren't playing now. The biggest complaint by people I know was drive time to get to other clubs.

The last time I played my team was in a division with teams from Rancho Cucamonga and Thousand Oaks. It is about a 2 hour drive from RC to TO with no traffic. I lived in the middle of the two, so it still took an hour to get to each of those clubs. Playing TT killed an entire day for 2 matches.

In the highest division, there used to be a couple of 2300/2400+ people who drove up from San Diego. They are no longer playing.

If you live near the middle of LA, you can get to Westside TT, Santa Monica, and 2 clubs in Korea Town within 30 min. Add another 10 min or so and you can be in the San Gabriel Valley where there are three clubs - LATTA/Gao Jun/Grace Lin.

We wanted to do this within Texas at one point, since there were (and are) quite a number of 2500-2650 players.   It is a four-five hour drive from Houston to Dallas depending on traffic (for example).  At the end of the day, nobody wanted to organize it and really good players didn't want to make the trip and pay the hotel and gas if they weren't reasonably sure they would get paid.

Texas is the same size as France.  Imagine trying to have a league match between a Houston team and an LA team.

A simple questionnaire emailed to registered USATT clubs should have alerted the organizers whether they would get enough participation for the league and if not why.

US Table tennis needs its own version of Rex Sinquefield.  Then the sport will have a future.

Yes, a philanthropist could help jumpstart the sport in the USA.

This is a good example of people who know a lot about TT in the USA who simply overestimated their plan.

Philanthropy has been tried to promote table tennis.

Arthur Gilbert put on the Gilbert Cups in the 90s, which featured top players like Waldner, Saive, Cheng Yinghua, KTS.

You can see matches on youtube

Maybe Mark Zuckerberg.  Who wants to step up and pitch it to him?  There is an obvious choice but I don't know her well enough to see if she's up for the task.

Ariel has had many meetings with Warren Buffet (and Bill Gates).

You can make an absolute killing coaching in these 'techie' campuses, but the philanthropy from these 'techie' communities (despite so much $$$$$$$$$$$) has been lacking.

Philanthropy has bigger concerns than funding professional ping pong - Buffett, Gates, Zuck all know this.

Corporate sponsors might be interested eventually, but the sport isn't there yet.

Only if it was not super expensive to enter these leagues, i don't think any other country's leagues charge this much, i may be wrong about it, but can someone from Germany or Europe in general weigh in on how much does it cost to enter a tournament?

I would think a philanthropist would not promote "professional ping pong" but more concerned with Ping Pong for the general population, which could help the sport in the USA.
