The guy in black seems much better than the old guy, so I don't know how hard the guy in black was trying. I didn't see much in the way of strong serves by either player.
Guessing wildly I'll put the old guy at 700 and the other anywhere from 1000 to 1300. If the old guy were pushing the guy in black I'd have a better idea. |

Those aren't 700 or 1300 serves.

i agree, they may not be 2000+ but they are definitely better 1300. they seem to able to keep the rally going which most sub 1300 players would miss the ball after a couple of hits. |

It scares me Rick, but I agree with you on their rating. Maybe we should have geographic ratings. If those players are 1600"s and 1800's I need to move there so instead of 1575 I could be 2000.

With USATT standard, I think both are less than 1500.

+1 We've got guys in our club who could pass for twins for these two and their ratings are well under 1100. Also, you can't always go by service skills (although I don't consider these serves great). We've got another guy in club who is around 1100, but if I posted just a video of his serves, you'd think he was 1850. |

Considering that pretty much everything they do is "wrong" according to how it should be done, they do get some nice rallies going. Still, these guys would struggle to play in our regional league, which is basically a bunch of none practicing hobby players.
As for Usatt ratings, Im finding it hard to estimate my own rating and I really dont have a clue about the difference between a 800 and a 1200 rated player, but my guess is that both of these players would fall under 1500, probably by a wide margin. |

It's interesting how large the variation in the estimates ranges.. I've decided to upload a video of 3 players at my local club (who are originally from 3 different regions but now live in FL) to see on who gets closest to their actual rating.. They do have a USATT rating, so we will actually know who is right.

After doing the Boston tourney and seeing some of the 1100-1400 field, I doubt either of these gents would be able to hold a 1400 rating in the Boston area. I played a Chinese Achuma with a hammer FH and rally monkey skills. I had to rally my ass of or spin her outta the area. My win vs her was not very convincing and I am (maybe better to say WAS low/mid 1900s)

... of course. I think the older gent is <1100, the other guy <1300. It is not that they each don't have some nice shots, but overall it takes much more than that.

That Chinese Achuma at the time had a 1400ish rating I heard. She prolly moved up in level after yesterday. She couldn't block heavy topspin, couldn't block a well placed attack on her serve, but could rally all day hard/flat and counterpunch your medium topspins fast at you. She knew placement and her fast/flat drives are difficult for a close to the table player to cope with. I had to scrape the bottom real hard to get to some of her smash drives to my wide FH from mid-distance. I couldn't get those a couple of years ago, not enough footwork or balance to move back then. That shows the value of lessons.
I think either of those gents would get smoked 11-5 each game vs her. Edited by BH-Man - 04/20/2014 at 7:31pm |

I think they are both close to 1500 add or take 100; to arrive at that value I added 200 points to what i thought they looked like, a couple of 1300 players; since in a video we always look 200 or more points worse than our rating, 1500 sounds right for them.
The guy in blue returns underspin and topspin serves well; he blocks and uses his bh very well with a nice wrist snap action following through; he is older but plays efficiently. I am even sure he could take down rushing 1700 players sometimes.

There's a reason that nobody can estimate it well. There isn't a difference in level between pretty much any 1500 player and 1700 player. Basically under 1800 the rating has little to do with level, everything to do with style match up. You can get by being a one trick pony, and your trick isn't as good as someone elses trick but is better that another someone else. But you can't tell me you can look at a guy and say he's 1500 instead of 1700 unless you looked at his rating. Rating is just how well you could play who you had to play on one day. Unless you're upwards of 23-2400 where it really is tactics and skill differences, these guesses are impossible.
