The vid uses old balls. We mostly practice with old balls unless he has a tournament coming up using new balls.

He is currently using.

The vids always end with him either on the floor or being sent into the wall by his superior opponent.

His forehand is shaping up!

One thing though, not sure if this is a problem but he seems to pop his head/upper body up a bit when playing a backhand?

His BH is still better than his FH fatt, but that seems to run in the family.
The main issue he had with his FH footwork was that since he was on a coaching course with a Chinese coach and learned crossover footwork a couple of years ago, he has over-used it. Even when only moving a very small amount to his FH side he has left the movement very late and then relied on crossover footwork to get him there. This often means that he overshoots where he needs to be. I was onto this and constantly reminding him about it when we trained together, but there were sessions during the week when I wasn't with him and when he wasn't being watched so closely where he would slip back into bad habits. I took the decision in the summer to withdraw him from all of his other sessions to make sure we sorted it out. As a consequence he has been working only with me for the last 4 months or so. Plenty of irregular footwork exercises and lots of nagging. We have also looked at increasing the length of his backswing on his FH and moving the bat in a more horizontal direction when hitting the ball.
And Ian, yes he does lift his head and his body up when he hits backhands. He can do it perfectly and keep everything still for 2 or 3 rallies after being reminded, but we soon slip back. It is likely that this will be a future project.
