I'm getting a viscaria soon and i've read is some forums and thread that the best weight for a viscaria
is around 88-89g, while some say its around 92-94g. Is this true? How
does weight affect it? and what is the best weight for a viscaria?
Thanks :) |

How good are you what level are you there is now best weight in general if you are not an international player you don't need 90gr so it could be from 81-90

in general, heavier blades are preferred by professionals bc they offer greater higher end shot output and more absorption when blocking.
viscaria is usually played by speed and spin-oriented loopers as opposed to power. so heavier is considered better. i was willing to pay a premium to obtain a slightly used 93g one. i wondered if it was just hype but you can feel the difference. even using less power, my shot was at least as powerful than with my 88g. i didn't get a chance to compare blocking bc I didn't have an extra tenergy for the same setup. unless you're a kid or quite muscle-bound at the opposite end, i would not go below 83g. for heavy hitters, they don't need the extra power so 83-88g is a better range unless you're pro. in the end though, whatever feels most comfortable to you is most important. i've asked some 2600's and they had no idea what their blade weighed, just knew it was on the heavier side among those they've tried.

I don't know about others, but generally my blades get heavier with age, then settles to an average. So if your brand new blade weighs say, 88g, varnishing adds about 2-3g and within months it will be around 91-94g. I think its because I still use old style glue which seeps into the wood over time. I think.

i got one 84g and always feel like it's almost flying out of my hand when i'm smashing the ball.
May be it's just me, but i've got the feeling Butterfly handle is smaller than other brands and their blades are getting lighter in weight which doesn't hit hard like heavy blade. I also think that heavy blades (more than 91g) are more controllable somehow. |

I like mine (88g to 90g) & yet the 84g (I think...) is kinda like an odd child. it's top Koto plies are so "graphical & pale" vs the others.

Thanks guys! I'll be getting one withing the 88-90g, since my current blade a Stiga Clipper wood, not even wrb, before sanding the handle was very heavy. The
Total setup weight before I sanded the master handle to a straight
handle was 198g. After sanding 186g. So, the blade weight must have been
greater than 95g or something. My avenger 5 weighs around 86-88g. :)

I have had 84, 88, 90 and 93.5 g Vis. They are very different from each other. I like the 93.5 g the most.

must be lucky to have everyone here at the same age, strength, playing style, hand size, ability, using bats made in the same factory and same year and all enjoy identical rubbers

Problem is that is is not so easy these days to find new ones in that preferred weight range. Lately they have been very light.

It is possible that the Viscaria blades built today to be lighter because the core is no longer kiri and is balsa?

I think it's bad by the company that it can change so much in weight from blade to blade, I mean 10g makes a lot of difference when you play. Of course it's hard to get every blade exactly the same but 10g is to much of a difference..

I do not think it was such a good comparison. What I meant was that I don't like that the same type of blade can differ so much in weight. I know that other brands and other blades are more trustworthy when it comes to this. I mean you can't have a reserve blade that weights 10grams more that your first blade if you need to make a quick change in a tournament.

Blades can be snowflakes, fine. But then manufacturers or vendors should work out some kind of system for allowing players to purchase blades weighing what they want. It would be nice is reputable vendors weighed their inventory and made that an available purchase option. The current system of advertising one specific weight and then mailing out a blade within 10g sucks. A simple way to win my business and distinguish yourself among online table tennis vendors... |

There are no ideal weights...
It depends from a player to another one. It depends also of the hardness of a particular blade and of course of the kind of rubber and thickness. Viscarias can be so different. Now, I like Viscaria with a weight between 92-95gr. Before, with 1,9mm t64; I used to prefer with a weight under 90gr

FYI. You can choose preferred weight of Viscaria here: http://ttnpp.com/store/home/627-butterfly-viscaria--7.html I bought from them before and the weight listed is quite accurate. On the box that I received, the weight is written in pencil mark. Edited by zhijie - 11/27/2014 at 9:58am |
