Is it possible for amateur player to suffer from back muscle imbalance? what are some prevention method one can use?

Weightlifting. You can do everything except for shrugs. This will help keep your muscles even.

Another option is to play or do shadow swings with the opposite hand. This will help develop muscles on the opposite side.

This whole article is great but to stay on the topic of "why not shrugs?" I direct your attention to the section titled "How to play in a more relaxed way". In particular, number 5 of that section titled traps.

Shrugs increase the strength and size of your upper trapezius muscles. The upper trapezius muscles are probably the only muscles in your entire body detrimental to table tennis. The larger they are and the more tense they are, the more your movement on strokes is limited and hindered.

So I say to any table tennis player that I encourage you to strengthen every single muscle in your body, even your lower and middle traps, but to avoid working your upper traps.
