They do - at cadet and junior level. But then they get stuck and usually do not progress further. In the last 10-12 years there were only around ten players from Russia who were in the top 100 WR. Best fo them was Alexey Smirnov who at some point was WR #11 (he won Europe-12 in 2005, beating Samsonov in the final), then Shibaev who is now in the #20s somewhere, then Vlasov, Skachkov, Kuzmin, Shmyrev, Rubtsov, Mazunov, Liventsov, Paikov and perhaps a couple more. |

What happens after is called lack of: - money - good facilities - traning with the right partners and coaches - international experience. It has changed somewhat to the better in the last 10-15 years but is still not enough to transform into serious results. Overall sport penetration is also a problem. The number of registered players in Russia is about 4-7 thousand (per 150 mln). Which is about the same as in USA (per capita). That is way below what is necessary. Granted there is a lot of players outisde of the system who play commercial tournaments, train etc, but it is still a parameter to look at. Far far cry from countries like Germany and France, or even Romania, Austria, etc. I suspect that in that aspect Russia is behind countries like England, Poland, Spain, Serbia, Hungary, Czech Rep etc. |

wow, Russia has so many good kids. I wonder why they can't reach the top top level, at least of Europe.
