-----0. All-ee all-ee in free. Here I come, ready or not. Listen to the rumble, The rattle and the roar, As I climb atop my soapbox To make glockpongers sore. I don't get a single penny For speaking truth to power. Derailing every thread while Screaming HARDBAT every hour. Actuay, igorponger's post was pretty funny. Table Tennis Reporter seems to be one mighty fine tabloid, and best of all, it's free. And there's some good stuff in there, like The National Enquirer, if you can get past the headlines--My Black Tag Viscaria Was Kidnapped by Aliens. Too many damn acronyms. Just what the hell is an ABS ball anyway? Absolute bull s#$%, if you believe Chicoficho? But....igorponger may, though no fan of hardbat, have a point. I've practiced at the Topspin Club in Milpitas, CA back in March 2015 HB to HB with both a BTY and a Stiga 40+ mm. ball. Don't know, don't really care if they were ABS or not. Except that the BTY ball broke almost in two after about 20 minutes of casual hitting and chopping against my good friend and two-time U-1500 HB champ Hermann Luechinger, and when hitting and chopping left handed against former U-2000 HB champ Al Papp (also a lefty with a delicious classic game) with the Stiga, which turned from a spheroid into an ovoid, both were ridiculously easy to play with HB/HB. I wonder who igorponger's buddy who claimed that when using sponge it was just like playing hardbat was? The only player I ever saw who could play inverted sponge just like hardbat was the late Dick Miles. Edited by berndt_mann - 10/21/2017 at 11:55pm |

So it looks that now, we have ABS balls from majority of the major brands:
Nittaku, DHS, Double Fish, Stiga, Butterfly, Andro, Donic Does it mean that, most likely, the seamless balls from XSF, Joola, etc are going to lose out and get extinct?

The G40+ dents easily - I think you are giving it a bit of a pass.

I like putting heavy topspin on the ball...

I wish they would pay me! But alas.... My little soapbox here gets me nothing.
That said, I think it is unlikely that DHS paid a Donic-sponsored player. |

You could say the same about posters supporting various balls on this forum. |

may be people just don't bother to protest anymore I am fine with D40+ but make no mistake that I am happy with the ABS balls. Did you play with D40+ for one month then switch to S40+ balls? Or, did you find that one in few of D40+ had thicker outer wall and it was faster?

it's MUCH LIKE HARDBAT...
Nobody is happy about the ABS plastic. A guy once told me in a vexed voice: It feels much like you playing a hardbat game with the sponged rubber. It is most adequat comment on the plastic, indeed. Edited by igorponger - 10/18/2017 at 7:58am |

See comments from Dima Ovtcharov on new DHS D40 balls. I have found over the last few years that very little of what Igor has written about plastic balls is accurate.

Let me disagree with you right here. I have not seen any protests with DHS D40+ being the official ITTF ball. As a defender, I can say it is the ball I play the most if given a choice and I would rate it close second to nittaku which I won't buy b/c of its price.

@zeio
DO NOT TRUST THE PICTURE... So nice pictures, and the real ball is a crap. Plastic of sterene-butadiene composition can't yet emulate celluloid somewhere closely. It plays and sounds too differently even to a naked eye,. And I know why. I took up some specialized study about the ABS material and here is the brief summary. -- All ABS balls, whether made in China or Japan, they all have got the outer wall much thicker than cellulloid or acetate wall. IT is cristal-clear for everyone, the thicker ball will always produce a different bounce and different play. Far different. Nobody is happy about the rock-hard ABS balls now present on market. With time, this could be improved by making the ball shell thinner and softer. Looking forward to see many new ABS derivatives coming on market, to produce a better controllable play. Russians still font of celluloid, my all playmates keep stuck to the old good celluloid. |

Glass smooth is an understatement. It is round, but the hardness does not feel particulalry even and the bounce reflected that. ILya

some clubmates insist on playing with the G40+ in my club. It sounds broken... always, and its glass smooth after some use....
Being objective... it is a very round ball, no wobbles and it maintains its white color throughout its life unlike joola flash, np40+, and xsf balls. On the side note if i had to rank the balls ive tried based on few criteria it would go something like this: Roundness: NP40+ = G40+ > Joola Flash > XSF Color: G40+ > NP40+ > Joola Flash = XSF Sound: NP40 + = Joola Flash > XSF > G40+ Durability: NP40+ > G40+ > Joola Flash > XSF Still have yet to try the DHS D40+ Is butterfly ever going to release a plastic ball that is 'made in japan'? So far they got the g40+ which is made in germany and now this one that is made in china.

Couldn't agree more. I played at a couple of places in Chicago last month and they insisted on using the G40 ball. I had never tried it before, so this was my first experience. "God-awful" is very appropriate. ILya

Butterfly's first ABS ball? Looks yellowish, sort of like D40+, so I am assuming it's their first ABS ball |
