Over the last 6 months, I've been working on: 1) Return to ready position 2) Backhand over the table topspin 3) Bending my knees I wanted to thank APW for item #1 The Banana Flip thread for item #2 And numerous MyTT posters who pointed out that I stand upright like a two by four. Conscious focus on these elements in practice matches hasn't made all of these things automatic (yet) but they are starting to bear fruit. Item #2 cost me a lot of points and games in practice matches, not because the flips were unsuccessful, but because I had never practiced the sequences that follow a backhand opener. In all, these three keys allowed me to play much more aggressively and consistently and eventually finish 6-1 in my Ratings Central 1000-1300 division at the Bridgeton, ME Winter Open, good enough for 2nd place (the first place finisher tied my record, but was my only loss of the day). Over the course of the day, I beat several players I had never beaten tournaments, and players that I had not posted a club or tournament win against in over 4 years. I can barely walk today. That's usually a good sign that I played with my legs instead of just my arm. However, the shoulder is a bit tired as well, so there's still work to be done :D ADDENDUM Results posted: 146 Point Gain. I think I just "leveled up" :) |
