I would think a philanthropist would not promote "professional ping pong" but more concerned with Ping Pong for the general population, which could help the sport in the USA.
There are so many more worthy causes than ping pong. It would have to be someone that really loves and plays the sport. There are many very rich players who don't give much to ping pong. If our own rich players won't help the sport, why should an outsider? |

What is a hobby league? Most clubs have leagues with all levels of play. At our club the weakest players play in the bottom group. |

Then there is a hobby league in every garage.
We have two groups in the area who play in different barns. They drink beer and tell lies. Usually about 10 players and one table. Once a year they get together and play each other. |

Hmm, you had me at 'beer'... Seriously - one of the best parts of Hilversum TT club in Netherlands (visited there last month) is a bar right outside the playing hall. Might be a bit hard to pull it off here, though, with licensing and all.

We have the Capital Area Table Tennis League here, draws from Northern Virginia, DC and southern Maryland. Two seasons a year, team competition, with six singles and a doubles match. Been pretty stable at about 100 players, 4 divisions of 6 teams each. Ratings from sub-1000 to 2400. www.capitaltt.com |

Yeah Mike, nothing beats getting a bunch of buddies to play in your garage, breaking out the brewskis, and swapping war stories about your table tennis exploits, some plausible, but none true. The Hilversum Club, pgpg, sounds like a pretty good place to play. Especially when I could drink pints of good cold tall ones, and my world class strokes in slow motion would not be affected. Beer probably even helped my defense. Now I think I know why Waldner ran into some problems against a few Dutchmen at recent Hilversum tournaments. The barkeeps may have spiked Waldner's Amstel Light with Absolut.
