Has anyone ever seen a Hurricane 3 with red sponge? A buddy of mine has one but the label was cut off. He says he remembers that it was Hurricane 3 when he bought it. This rubber played much faster and felt more springy compared to my H3. The only thing I could come up with was that it was a Nittaku H3. Any thoughts?

Maybe it's TinArc III, which has a red sponge

When did TinArc III become available? He purchased the rubber about 3-4 years ago.

It can be Haifu whale with red sponge, that is the most common Chinese rubber with red sponge, it's also much faster than H3

TA3 hasn´s got red sponge. It´s orange. It can´t be a legit H3, unless he got another of the millions fakes out there, maybe  it´s a BW2 or Shark 2 old version.

Either it is not H3, or it is H3 topsheet on Haifu red sponge (chance is low)

Tin Arc 3 has a super red sponge, regular Tin Arc has an orange sponge.

Why would he cut the label part of the rubber?

There was a version of the non-NEO hurricanes that had a red/deep-orangish sponge (maybe the red you were talking about?).  I had a black sheet of hurricane 3 with that sponge... I think it was the provincial version and mine was very hard.  I got it from a shop in Taiwan that used to be "ilpp.tw" sometime in 2007 I think.

Also I know some penholders cut off any unnecessary part of the rubber on their FH to maximize the playing surface (I know a lot of SP players that do this), especially if they leave room on the blade for their fingers.  I believe its legal as long as the ittf logo and ID number (if it has one) is still present.

I have a black DHS G888 with red sponge bought a year or 2 ago. May be that is something similar.

I love that the label has been cut off but he "remembers it was Hurricane". This is a classic case of cognitive bias if I've ever seen one. He probably has some kind of Haifu rubber.
