Practice, practice and more practice.

The problem is, that when playing a match you don't have enough time to think about what to do. You have to play by instinct, which basically means, that you have to repeat what you have learnt during practice.

You can look at ball being sliced with pimples coming towards you and say "It's without spin", but your body doesn't have time to react on that kind of thinking, instead it just reacts as if the ball had been sliced with a normal rubber (that is, if you're not used to play against pimples), and you end up with a shot that's -1 meter too long, or if you choose to return it with backspin, it'll be way to high.

"Use your brain"

That's excatly what you shouldn't do. If you look at the time it takes for your brain to process input and then send nerve signals to your body parts, it's simply impossible. It all comes down to learning your central nerve system what to do in a given situation. And that's done by practice, practice and more practice.

Think about this situation: You haven't been playing table tennis for a long time (could be during your sommer holiday). First time you go and play it seems as if your playing as good as before you took a break. But that's only true as long as the balls are being played regularly. First time the ball comes in your backhand and you expected it to be in your forehand, you aren't able to move your arm quick enough to hit the ball. Simply because you have to think about what to do instead of playing on instinct (using your central nerve system).

I think its more because he disguises his shots better, besides its not at all difficult to override instinct.

It's true that all great players, those very few, use their brain. What makes it difficult it's that, like metkar said, that "it takes (time) for your brain to process input and then send nerve signals to your body parts."
So using their brain will slow them down but they would learn and get the correct stroke of returning the ball to their opponents' table, albeit less offensive because they have less time to make a big stroke. As they get use to their opponent's shots (i.e. more practice thru using your brain) they then can think less and be faster and thus more powerful. If you look at some of the slow starters like Waldner that's what they are doing at the beginning of the match. They are trying to get use to their opponent's shots; they are practicing on the spot and perfecting at the end!
It's a natural part of many experience players but not suited for the 11 point games, as games are quickly over. Chinese players (now some European players) are masters of finishing the point in the first three shots and don't let long rallies developed so that their slower opponents don't get a chance to "get into the match."
But to learn/improve it's inevitable that one has to use their brain and suffer defeats. Just my 2 cents.

try this, open up your bat(110 degree) move slidly foward drive the ball hard at d top of d bounce, once it goes in fast several time ur pimp opponent will be frighten to give u a drive ball..... if it is too high just smash it.... if low just push it shot with open bat still, u will get back a drive ball a repeat the step above.

Must say I agree with ttnooblar. It's inbetween points you can use your brain, and of course when you practice.

Only time during a point where you have time to think is when you serve.
