I've been very fascinated with Truls' short push lately watching his matches - he uses a very fast setup but yet has absolutely no problems controlling it super short (unlike those who use Chinese rubber where short pushes are much easier). So it seems that what he does different, is that he goes into a lunge with the arm straightening out like a fencer and makes a very sharp jab towards the side of the ball almost as if he's stabbing the ball on the side. It doesn't seem like a gentle stroke unlike other players (say Timo Boll's or even Waldner's short push).
The advantage with his method is that he gets to take the ball super early, and also it seems even shorter than the normal short push method. I'm planning on trying this out
