Glad to see the video of Li Hu. I was greatly impressed by him in the finals. He doesn't seem to be trying to hard in this match but you can still see the skill that he possesses in the relaxed manner that he is able to control his opponent.

Meh, he just holds the ball in the palm, drops it a little below table height then toss it upwards. It's not like he hides the ball under the table for a few seconds. It'll be ok when the kid grows taller. I think both players' serves are at least 8 out of 10 in the legality meter. |

I was there when Charles was faulted several times in his match vs Tahl Leibovitz.
The umpire could have called every serve as illegal. The rule states once the ball is presented on the open palm, the ball has to be thrown as vertical as possible. What Charles does illegally is two things: His initial motion takes the ball below the table. Then he moves his hand closer to his body about 6-10 inches and then throws the ball up. While it is clear, Charles is not trying to cheat with his serve, fact is his serve motion is clearly not legal. |

The thing is, many pros have illegal serves if you follow the rules that strictly. Most pros toss the ball a good 20~30 degrees off vertical. Schlager, Maze, Wang Hao, they all do it, except when they do a high-toss serve. The only pro come to mind who always toss nearly vertical is Samsonov. A few pros also move the hand after they show the ball in the open palm, then toss it. Pretty sure Liu Shi Wen does that. IMO the 2 most important things for a legal serve is to let the other guy see the contact point and to hit it behind the end line, because those are the 2 places where a server can gain advantages if they get away with illegal serves. |

Hi Bogeyhunter,
As you played with He Zhi Wen, do you know his setup?

I noticed on one of the videos that he puts pips (short I believe) on his BH. He doesn't use his BH rubber, but that information is also important.

Yes, that was in 2003, the year before Ma Long won it. And, BTW, Li Hu is ranked at world number 21 on rating central, that many people believe is a much more accurate rating system. |
