Subject: Kreanga Carbon Legal Modification
Date Posted: 10/07/2007 at 2:17am
I took the advice of a very brave forum member to make my KC legal. My modification is 90% completed and I am very very very optimistic that I have created an IMPROVED KC. This baby is lighter and I'm sure it will have more feel by the time I'm finished. I will use my good 'ol triple sealing technique to finish it off.

What do you think?

If it is only taking off the silver sealant, I think a normal digital scale would hardly give any reaction. I would guess around 3 grams will be taken.

Hate to let you Down Mate, But triple sealing will again make your Blade Illegal.

The rule states that you must be able to see and Feel the Grain, I coat would probably be ok, as long as you can still feel the grain.

Whatever you do, dont make it smooth like Glass.

Is the KC the only BTY blade that is painted with colours on the blade head: I mean is he the only blade that is only silver coloured e.t.c.

I think painting is Ok, as long as you can actually feel the grain of the timber.

The Dawei Bio X50 has a light coat of silver, but you can still feel the grain.

Rob,
I've owned two Dawei x50s and no way I could feel or see the grain. Those babies seem like they're dunked in a bucket of silver muck. I still like them, but there's NO chance they would meet the criteria for "legal" as described above. Are you sure the grain has to be seen and felt? I hope you're info is incorrect. I learned this technique from high level Chinese players in China. Is it illegal in the international events or only the USA events?

Here's a few pics of my new, modified, super-duper KC (not finished):

uploads/New/20071007_103810_KC-x3.gif - 20071007_103810_KC-x3.gif

uploads/New/20071007_103834_KC-x2.gif - 20071007_103834_KC-x2.gif

uploads/New/20071007_103853_KC-x1.gif - 20071007_103853_KC-x1.gif

It's certainly lighter. A lot of silver goo came off. I'm sure it will be a few grams lighter even after I triple seal!

I bought a $30 sander from Sears, and did the job in 30 minutes with a 220 grade sand paper sheet. I can't believe I've been sanding by hand all these years.

Can you please post the picture of your sander ? Thank you.
Regarding your picture of KC, where does the black smear on the right side comes from ? Does it come from the carbon ply ?

The sanders at work. It's not the orbital kind or the belt kind. It's the other kind! About the black smear . . . I'm worried it's a thin part of the wood where the carbon is exposed. I thought it was an area where the coating was deep into the woodgrain, but . . . maybe hand sanding would be safer, but . . . well actually . . . it looks like a factory defect because the blade is level and flat. I think the wood was thin in that area and the coating covered it. It's like putting carpet over a rotten floor. I'll finish sealing and play with it. It's not going to be a collectable anyway so I'll beat it up and hopefully win some games. Maybe the exposed carbon area will be a new sweet spot. LOL!!!! weeoooo crash and burn and burn and burn.

I don't even need sanding/sander to remove some of the silver paint on my KC (just a little test that I did).

Posted By: tommyzai
Date Posted: 10/08/2007 at 1:09am
Mine had a VERY thick coat of it. When I was finished I had a handful of silver goo. I think they had to cover an uneven woodply. Bastards!! Anyway, I'll use it and beat on it. I traded for this one so I don't mind. Maybe it cost me about $70 in goods, not $200.

weeoooo

Sorry mate.

1stly: Kudos to tommyzai for spending the effort to remove that silver crap off a genuinely good blade. If you have the skills and dont excessively sand you will have a excellent blade + the handle looks way sexier than the ishlion.

2ndly @ Pingpongrob

Not very nice to shoot him down like that. I think your shop is worthless and you've gone too far with Dawei making yourself hated.

Well, I must confess you are right. I only have tested a KC for one training session. Very few here in France have this Ishlion and I haven't met any of them. I just reported what I've red on TT forums saying they were similar except for the silver coating. In what do they differ appart thickness ? Do they behave differently ? Pls adv.

ishlion's thickenss of hinoki is thiner than KC, and the carbon is more close to the surface of the blade (top layer)... plus.. it feels lot harder than KC...

I must say that the new "improved" look makes it look alot better. Nice work Tommy.

Not sure about the legality of the blade, I couldn't spot any place were you went to deep on the blade. Looking forward to hear how it performs compared to how it used to perform.

About the attack on PPRob, I believe this was a comment made to illustrate how the poster felt about Robs comment towards Tommy. I agree that it "sounded" harsh, but please try to remember that not every one who posts here have English as their first language, so some of our posts might come out wrong. No need to complain about his shop, I haven't heard of any customer being dissatisfied with the service yet.

I must be getting soft letting members go off on me and not attacking back! :-). I'm hoping it's an English as a second language thing. Anyway, I do appreciate the props I got for trying to transform something useless into something useful. I learned a lot. It was an expensive experiment, but I think in the end I will have created something interesting. I will let you all know how it plays by next week. I need to over-seal the carbon exposed area to protect it and level out the playing surface.

Speedplay, thanks for sticking up for me!! I'm so glad we're cool and teamed up against injustice. As far as my bat . . . it's great. Even with a worn spot in the corner it's better than an illegal blade that would be tossed in a drawer somewhere. I appreciate the repair offers, but no need. This bat is a salvage job anyway. I would never buy one again no matter how it plays. I used to be into the techie coated stuff, but now I'm going old school wood. I might finish this baby up with some creative sealing to protect the oversanded area, then glue on an H3 and see what happens. Chances are I will give it as a present to one of my disabled clients, who lives on $20 spending money per month. He will be thrilled to have a bat that sold for $200 with or without my modification. Stillllll, it will be cool to see what my handywork amounted to. I will take pics soon and report my findings.

To be very honest wif u all, I'dn't even dare/dream of/have the gut to sand any of my blades..esp. those godly or heavenly jpens. BUT on the other hand a blade like Kreanga Carbon just begs for ur itchy hands to do someth'm abt the "Faked" or "High-teched" paint job.
We all know now how Tz is, just a can't sit or stand still kinda t/t fanatic, just wanna "Do Someth'n" or "Do anyth'n"!
Just on aside, if u guys want a perfect Blade-neck-sanding job, TommyZai really does a fine job so is RYNO...I'dn't hesitate to send my blades to them.
Talk abt sending blade around US, I did send once my TBS to Wisconsin, but it was sent back due to wrong address n I resent again for a t/t forum friend and he sent it back after test n the blade was still just fine. Just amazing journey my TBS had taken.

This is just a great idea. We could call the thread : The extraordinary journey of the modified KC. Where we could tell the story of the blade. We each keep it 1 week or two and we dress it with diff rubbers and we take pictures that we report here. We would report against who it has played and how it behaved. This game would just cost us the postage and at the end, tommyzai, we would send it back to you after 2 or 3 round the world. The legendary modified KC will then become priceless...What do you think ?

Let's do it!! I will need until Sunday to finish, then I can mail on Monday. Who's first? I'm in California for what it's worth. This will be fun. Hey, I don't want you guys to worry to much if it gets a little wear here and there. I've destroyed the value of this thing anyway. If along the way one of you loves it and wants it back we can work something out after the rounds are complete. Deal?

It's going to arrive with uneven sanding (a little carbon exposure in the lower corner), but smoothed out with Varathane. We'll not only get to see and feel what a KC is like stripped down, but we'll also experience what it's like heavily sealed/lacquered. I have no idea how this thing will feel, but it's going to be light and fast! I think the BH side looks less grinded away, so you might consider using that as the FH side.

Even if this thing is hated all around the world I think it will be worth the postage for the novelty of it all.

Let's do it!

Maybe we should each initial it with a perm marker too. We might be starting a really cool trend in forum fellowship.

Don't forget to initial/sign on it so as to let ppl of the world know this modified KC has been flying around the "t/t world".

I am on pins and needles!!!!! Were going to be part of a WORLD WIDE Experience!!!!! Can't wait to try it! Did you seal the blade with your max seal job so people can see what we do to our equipment??? LOL. Might start a new trend all over the world!  I will try to get hold of Seemiller.  I think it deserves his sig before the end of the journey. Maybe he can sign on the way back from the outer reaches.
One great idea Tommy. When we go to China, you can show the Chinese "The most famous blade in the WORLD!!!" and get Ma Lin to sign!!!

Oh Yeahr, It's heavily sealed . . . glassy. It will be fast and light! in this case the triple sealing was a must to protect the two corners that I sanded down to the carbon. Ma Lin wrote me an email the other day. I should have mentioned the blade . . . next time!! Get Seemiller in on it.

YES! It's good publicity, especially for Ma and Danny, who both have their best days behind them. LOL :-).

Sign anyway you like as long as it's not too big. We need to leave room for Ma to sign.

I thought that any blade would be legal as long as the umpire could see verify the composition of the blade.  I would not be so worried that the blade would be disqualified as long as you've sanded off enough of the edge of the blade to see the thickness of wood and composite materials.  Now for those at the very top of the food chain at some tounaments the umpires might get more picky, but I just can't see it getting as bad as most folk are expecting.  But if someone is using a frictionless LP rubber this is banned, I can definitely imagine someone getting upset and turning them in to the umpire.

Someone knows the exact normative in the ITTF rules that KC doesn't satisfies to be an ilegal blade?.

Thanks in advance.

It's not in the rules, it's in the ITTF technical leaflet in the section on racket coverings, Section A.  Qualitative Criteria, subsection 2, says anything like lacquer on the wood cannot hide the wood by sight or touch.

http://www.ittf.com/stories/pictures/T4_Racket_Coverings_forBoD42014_final.pdf

A very thin layer of lacquer is permitted on the blade, only for the purpose of anchoring wood fibres thereby facilitating replacement of the racket covering. Anything more than this will be deemed to constitute a layer of plastic, and will not be permitted. This layer may be no more than 0.1 mm thick, and should not hide the wood from sight or touch. It is considered to be part of the blade, rather than part of the thickness of the racket covering. A thin layer of paint or plastic laminateis permitted on an uncovered non-striking side of the blade, for the purpose of having a proper red or black side.
