To all J-Penners out there:

When you serve, do you curl your fingers on the backside of your paddle(like C-Pen) or splay or spread it out?

Same for returning serve, fingers curled or fingers spread?

Thanks...

Are the fingers supposed to be spread out during play? I thought that the third finger should be near the midline of the blade and the other 2 fingers very close to the third finger. If it is spread out, won't it be difficult to get a closed bat angle on the backhand stroke/block. The spread fingers are good for power on the forehand, but gives almost no backhand.
So I guess during serve and return, the fingers are not spread out.

I curl my fingers on serve, return and backhand block.  This gives me  greater angle variation.

When I was playing J-Pen in the past, I didn't give this things much thought. The question emerged when I taught someone J-Pen basics recently. They complained that it is very difficult for them to execute the backhand strokes and blocks and also on the over the table play.

I guess I have a very flexible wrist Smile since I teach them not to change their fingers on the backside. I usually serve, return serve and perform backhand strokes using my thumb and wrist to change the angle of the bat with the fingers on the backside of the racket constant(spread out except on backhand topspins).

OK, i'll let them curl their fingers from now.

You should usually curl...

This gives the wrist so much more movement! [ie. for spin]

You really only need to spread when you're forehand driving and smashing...

I used to play Jpen but switched Cpen at the sight of RPBs ^^

I always curl my fingers, it gives more flexibility.
