Subject: Xiom Rubbers Help

Can I ask for a little guidance on Xiom rubbers? I'm familiar with how other brands will typically have a certain rubber, and then have a soft sponged version of that same rubber; Butterfly with their "FX", Andro with their "PowerSponge", Donic with their "Big Slam"... etc. Some, like Yasaka, even just straight forward calls their soft-sponged versions "soft"... imagine that. But I'm not sure how that works with Xiom rubbers... or perhaps it doesn't.

For example, what would be a Xiom rubber equivalent of Andro Hexer PowerSponge and Donic Baracuda Big Slam?

Is there a certain definition in terms of feel/hardness that goes with the names "Elite", "Asia", "Europe", "PRO"... etc, similar to how other brands do it?

Thanks.

Xiom's naming convention is pretty solid within a single range of rubbers. It becomes hard to compare across ranges though (Omega to Sigma, for example).

Generally, soft -> hard goes like this (and I'm talking about overall feel, not just sponge hardness):

Elite -> Europe -> Pro -> (Tour / Asia)

I'm not 100% on the distinction between Tour and Asia to be honest. Tour has only recently appeared in the Omega V line, so it's hard to compare back to Vega Asia. Maybe others can pitch in.

The problem is, these only hold in a specific range of rubbers. Vega Elite is softer than Omega IV Elite, for example. I'd say Hexer PS probably falls between Omega IV Elite and Omega IV Euro. Vega Elite is closEST to Barcuda BS IMO, but I don't think there's a direct equivalent in Xiom's line-up.

This was a great signature until I realised it was overrated.

My understanding is that, at least until Omega V series rubbers came out, these labels meant something like this:

Elite - very soft and spinny, for allround play
Europe - medium hardness, for european-style looping from mid-distance
Pro - hardest, for people who can swing hard
Asia - between Europe and Pro in hardness, for asian-style close to the table play

+1.

P.S.: BTW, xiomtt.com now lists details of Omega V Asia, Europe, and Tour but not the Pro version. IMHO, they're trying to differentiate these now by "strategy" - Asia for aggressive play, Europe for balanced mixed play, and Tour is touted as suitable for both "control" and "mixed" play strategy, whatever that means.

but boy do they pump out a lot of different product lines.
Makes it sort of difficult to follow and makes you wonder how can a company release so many different products so fast with improvements?

there is a logic, although I agree it's confusing:

- sigma series: rubbers mostly for pushblockers, not ideal for looping (not bad either).

- omega series: rubbers for loopers with emphasis on speed.

- vega series: rubbers for loopers with emphasis on spin but poor speed, for beginners.

- tau series: meant to resemble what Ma Long, Zhang etc. are actually using. I was totally wrong here. It is slower than NEO DHS rubbers and not reactive to booster  :)

The only piece that does not really fit is Vega China.

Yeah, I saw that and it worries me. I really, really like OVPro, but it's not even on their website.

It's the silliest thing I've read in a while. The Sigma series is probably the best at counterlooping amongst all of their lines. Omega has better opening loops while Sigma has better counterloops.

Sigma tons of spin...but very low throw angle, it's not good for looping, traiectory too much linear..

I love it,
Great for looping.
Just learn how to loop with low arc, its very deadly.
Check all the Chinese style - world level players. All using low arc rubbers to loop.
Hence your theory of low arc is not good for looping isn't true

World level players?

Dhs h3 :very high throw angle
Tenergy 05: very high throw angle too

I would say omega IV pro is the fasted xiom rubber I have tried. I have tried vega pro, vega Asia, vega Europe, sigma II Europe and sigma II pro, omega IV elite and omega IV pro. OMG IV pro is the hardest to control for me tho...

Both omega IV pro and vega asia at max thickness are pretty heavy.

compared to Tenergy or DHS they are not heavy at all...

fastest - sigma I, but it is too hard (that's why it's not popular)

omega is faster than vega but more linear so it won't have as strong of a kick. generally better for bh

spinniest - vega pro

however, best overall imo is omega v. sort of combines the best of vega and omega series

most powerful - sigma ii. it's pretty hard, but grippy the way hurricane is hard but still grippy. like sigma i, it's also very fast but since it's easier to spin, it's practically usable unlike sigma i.

This is something they also did with their blades when they first hit the scene circa 2008.  They tried to make things very "scientific" with all sorts of graphs that when you looked closely did not make a lot of sense, and their product line was huge.  Each blade was supposed to be scientifically tailored to a specific way of playing.  But they would change them every year (and stopped with the Joola-style head shapes) and would discontinue blades very quickly.  Their blade product line is a lot more stable these days.  But the array of rubbers is really hard to keep track of.  I owned a few of their blades, they were very beautifully made, but none of them quite did it for me.

It's worse than I thought.  I just checked the Xiom web page.  Vega (alone) comes in Pro, Europe, Elite, Asia, China, and Japan versions.  That is six variants just of Vega.  Also various forms of Omega II, III, IV and V.  Several Sigmas, a Tau, a Zeta, and then because they decided they were tired of Greek letters a Musa.   The mind boggles.   It would cost a great deal of money to try each of them to see which ones you liked.

I asked xiom about the hardness of pro and Asia.
The answer is
pro has a softer sponge but a harder surface.
asia has a harder sponge but a softer surface.

by comparing on the same serie.
