Played for the 4th time since coming back from my 10 plus year hiatus and my timing is starting to come back. Forehand loop is coming back surely but slowly...but since i dont want to hurt my back by twisting too much, i have decided to switch to short pips on the backhand. Are there any training and tips videos for backhand short pips. I prefer a pick and attack type of style. I have noticed that you have to generate all your own power with short pips and hit the incoming ball at the highest point. I just need some pointers and examples to lead me on the right track. By the way the Adidas Hypertouch was a little too soft for me on my forehand with the P7 2.0 and have changed to the Adidas Strike Carbon/Adidas Ultra Tenzone Max. Also changed to the Haifu Whale 2 Speed Glue instead of using the Donic Vario Glue. Any guidance is much appreciated. SmileSmileSmile

If you're in NYC, I would recommend contacting http://www.indoorsportsny.com" rel="nofollow - Shao Yu if you want to get some insight or coaching with short pips.  He is a 2500 one-wing looper with short pips (Stiga Clippa 2.0mm) on his BH.  You can watch him drilling with Gao Yanjun in this video to see his form and timing.

haha well in the video yes.  His FH loop and counter is no joke though despite being overshadowed by his characteristic BH punch.

He doesn't use in it in the matches I watch when he plays his peers - he seems to like to use his backhand all over the table. Maybe I have a bad sample, but two days of matches was enough for me.  He was amazingly backhand oriented.

Watching Shao Yu now on YT and maybe i will go visit his club. Its only about a 10 min drive for me. Coaching maybe later on, gotta see how the back holds up in regular once a week play. Also thanks for the pips recommedation and the HK one too. I am happy with the Adidas 1.8 spin blaze on the backhand. Shao Yus backhand is awesome! ThanksBig smile

In matches he definitely favors his BH punch, probably because it is unique to him at his level and vastly more powerful compared to any of his other shots.

And although his looping side isn't as outright powerful as other players his rating (although it is by no means weak), his FH counterloop off the bounce is another strong feature of his game.

I didn't even know you can boost pip sponge. Does that increase sponge elasticity and help generate more spin and/or speed?

Also congrats on breaking 1900 Schen!

I am using the Haifu Whale 2 speed glue on my Adidas Spin Blaze 1.8 and it only makes already soft sponge a little softer. But i am using 1.8 so my guess if you were using 2.0 or max, the effect would be greater.

The Tang Peng videos are awesome on YT, but very hard to find pointers. He plays way too fast....lol
He also plays off the table alot to favor his forehand too. The dream continues Smile

You can boost any sponge!  And it affects the pips in particular by making them faster/bouncier and feel slightly softer.  They also spread the pips structure out a little bit, I guess making them slightly trickier?  I'm not sure that effect is too noticeable with spin-oriented pips though.

And thanks! :)

Question, Does coach Shao have time at night to give lessons?. I pretty much work 7 days a week and can get to the club by 7 or 8. And does the club really close at midnight....and are there members still there to play. I am pretty much a night person these days. Thanks for the help.

I believe you can arrange something with him directly, and I know he has the night shift at the club on wednesdays.  The club officially closes around midnight, but really closes when the last member has left.

There is a night time crowd that gets there around 8-9 and stays til closing on days later in the week, ranging from 1200 to 2600 level!

I just went to dig out my 20 year old  TSP spinpips paddle on both sides.  It was great attacking rubber.
I just tried it just now and still a great attacking rubber on my forehand and backhand.

My question , is it still legal short pips ?

Posted By: Tinykin
Date Posted: 11/07/2014 at 6:59pm
No. There were some changes to ITTF rules regarding pips structure. This made those 90's TSP Spinpips illegal.
Do you have any spare?Smile

I don't have a spare.  It was the only paddle when I played as a kid.  Surprisingly, it is still almost like new.
I mean it is still spinny and can do loop.

I don't understand why they would ban such a good rubber and last so long !!! It just does not make any sense.

It was the rubber of choice for LGL whose serves were very effective.

I second that. Short pips is not just a rubber to SY, it's a part of his hand!!!
He can do lots of things with short pips.
I don't know how good his FH was bcoz he murdered me alive with just BH.
Try to get at least 2 lessons to get some basic and ideas down. Don't waste your time learning by yourself. His guy is a real deal.

there is no theory, butterfly reports had interviews of former european players with qoutes like this
" we cant let players turn the game in to service and smash" there was a meeting in africa where the ITTF stated that any pip  with some ratio should be illegal and that pip was the same used by the world champion in that year 1999...its like saying that any player using viscaria should not be allowed to play

i run a small online e-biz...yeah my health has deteriorated due to sitting at the desk all day long and staring like a zombie at the monitors DeadDeadDead So i decided on my Table Tennis comeback. So far its going well and about a month in, lost a couple of pounds. Getting in touch with my old TT friends and they are getting into the act too. We are meeting up this Sunday to get some practice in. My health is more important now that i am getting older. And if all goes well, maybe i can shoot for the stars and go for the 2000 ustta rating. Wink

Funny that Spinpips was mentioned - Shao Yu told me he used to use Spinpips before the ban, but he was only informed about the ban by an umpire 20 minutes before a match at US nationals that year and had to quickly change his rubber.  It turns out Clippa played the closest to spinpips for him

recommendation from the shops there I guess.  He's tried a few other older pips like challenger, superspinpips, and a few chinese ones but clippa was his weapon bazooka of choice after experimenting

do you know more short pips players(pro or any top level) beside shao yu and what are they using?

The only two other high level SP players I know in person are

Tong Fei Ming (Taiwanese National Women's Team)
Blade:  Stiga Carbo 7.6 - Master FL
FH:  Hurricane 3 national (orange) 2.2mm
BH:  Haifu Dolphin 2.0mm

Lily Yip (LYTTC)
Blade:  Timo Boll ALC - cpen
FH:  BTY Challenger Attack 1.9mm
BH:  BTY Challenger Attack 1.9mm

I've also taken a look of Guang Qing Feng's (2700 short pip chopper) setup:
Blade:  BTY Joo Sae Hyuk - FL
FH:  Hurricane 3 NEO (commercial) (not sure what thickness)
BH:  Spectol Soft or Spectol 21 - 1.7~1.9mm (not spectol speed despite Westchester's commentary)

I should also add that Shao Yu uses a Stiga Clipper Oversize WRB blade, and H3NEO Provincial 39deg 2.1mm on his FH.

Thanks for this, I knew something was off when they said Spectol speed. Nobody chops with Spectol speed.

However, I'm surprised about him using a commercial Neo. I figured any Chinese player 2500 and up who used Hurricane would use Provincial.

I saw him glue and cut a sheet of commercial at westchester just before playing (it was already tuned).  I assume he might have run out of his provincial supply during his contract with Lily Yip's and just put whatever on his forehand (I've even seen him use Omega IV Pro before as a last resort).

I'm sure it doesn't matter too much to him when he plays most people in the US, the only two people he's lost to here were world top 100 Bojan Tokic (once) and NYISC's coach Liang Jishan (twice).

Hey guys...does anyone play with short pips on the BH and ZJ ALC? Is it too soft for pips? What is your suggestion?

Posted By: 42andbackpains
Date Posted: 11/24/2014 at 5:38pm
I dont have a Zhang Zhike ALC. As you know, short pips on the backhand players are very few. I would advise you to ask your friends and playing partners to test out there blades with a piece of short pips rubber you can glue on. This is if they are willing to. Some people treat there blades as gold and they can get a little crazy. Otherwise it will cost you a lot of money purchasing and trying out new blades. For me from experience...i like harder and stiffer blades and lose some control due to the fast nature of the blade, but this is my own preference. Some people prefer softer blades for better control. You have to know your game and tactics and what your prefer. This is my opinion only...so always please form you own opinion and hope your decisions work out. Best of luck!!! Smile

Hey schen -

How did you know Guang Qing Feng wasn't using Spectol Speed?   Isn't the topsheet the same?

I'm a big fan of GQF and thought it would be odd for the commentator to mistake Spectol for Spectol Speed since Spectol is much more popular.

I asked Guang Qing Feng in person and confirmed with Lily Yip.  It is regular spectol, 1.7-1.9mm thickness.  The sponge is the difference, with spectol speed being harder and a minty-white color.  Guang Qing Fengs was very much yellow, and felt like regular spectol hardness, not 21 sponge.

I can also confirm this as I also did the same thing a couple of months ago.
