Timer 2:49 3:05 and many more times in the match. Heavy shame on Skachkov, and more so on the ump... Skachkov`s tossing obviosly not vertical. The umpire is a shy coward. Skachkov is a player much in disgrace for practising foul serving ever since his young . He had once been penalised 15 points during a team match Russia vs Japan at the 2005 World Youth Champs. |

I don't know why some people are a little bit obsessed by this rule. A lot of professionals like to lower their bodies when they serve, which is a major difference between professional serves and amateur services, so there can be a distance between the spot the ball is tossed and the spot the ball is hit. The taller the person, just like the Russian player in the video , the longer the distance. If the toss is low, it looks less vertical. If the toss is high, then it looks more vertical. I don't think he took advantage of this less vertical serve, he was just comfortable with low toss serves. As long as the toss is high enough so that your opponent can tell when the ball is contacted by the rubber, it should be OK. |

While I do hate cheating, I think its wrong to single out a player where 90% of the pros cheat. In my opinion, the problem with illegal serves is a problem with the umpires rather then the players. ------------- The holy grail |

By definition, if the toss is low, it is less vertical and if the toss is high it is more vertical :) All kidding aside, if 2 tosses move the same distance horizontal but vary in the vertical direction the lower one is less vertical. To look at it mathematically: A 6 inch high toss that gets tossed 2 feet in the horizontal (professionals often toss from around the center line to the outside line which is 2.5 feet) would result in roughly a 14 degree toss. A 3 foot high toss that gets tossed 2 feet in the horizontal would result in roughly a 56 degree toss. The higher you toss it, the close you get to the perfectly vertical toss of 90 degrees. You can argue that if you toss the ball 10 feet high from one edge of the table to the other, it's far more vertical that the typical low toss serve. It would result in a 63+ degree toss It would be impossible to enforce, but I think a toss that's less than 45 degrees should be deemed illegal as it's more horizontal than vertical. 45 degrees is not "near vertical" as the rule book requires. Truth be told, I'm more concerned about how he often leaves his arm out there.
