Of course, this is just one definition of "most popular", based on claimed number of fans. Alternatively, you could measure the number of participants, where soccer and table tennis finish as the top two. The general argument for the popularity of cricket is based on the great fan base in India, although I think the same argument can be made for table tennis and China. Generally, I'm suspicious of the claimed counts of "fans", because you can have fans that watch TV, fans that watch live, fans that are too poor to experience professional play, dedicated fans, part-time fans, and so on. The interesting question in the case of cricket is whether there should be a count of negative fans. Of all the sports that are listed, cricket is the one where it's hard to be a marginal fan. That is, I can find people who know just a little bit about tennis, table tennis, etc., and have a casual interest in those sports. However, for those parts of the world where cricket is not popular (such as USA), cricket is a complete unknown.
