Just don't make the mistake of confusing muscular definition for metabolic fitness, though.

Kenji and any other table tennis players really should only do dumbbell bench press (with a bit of a neutral grip).  Much less strain on the rotator cuff.   Exercises like lat pulldowns or pullups can also be done with a neutral grip.  Same with military press (with dumbbells.)

See FZD is a typical example

Fzd is an exception. He has the same muscular development as ma long or a lot of other Chinese players for example. The difference is that he is not as lean, which gives him a casual appearance.Yes he is chubby, but his footwork and understanding of the game is so good, that he doesn't have a disadvantage.

This thread should be called zero body fat. Lots of people are walking around with as much muscle as zjk or ml, but you can't see each one.

Because it is not about hitting the ball, it is moving to get to the ball and then getting perfect body rotation and staying in perfect balance to hit the next one.  WLQ was the first player who showed the advantage of being that strong and spending a lot of time in the gym to improve TT.

Some people post nonsense.

FZD is a bit like Ma Lin, is not quite so lean.  But his legs are an indication of the rest of his strength.

well overall muscle mass maybe, but you gotta hit the gym pretty seriously if you want his legs

I had zero body fat when I was around 19, but I don't recall noticing any of the roughly 640 muscles in my anorexic 127 lb. body.

This, however, did not prove too much of an impediment to learning defense, as I was quick side to side and back and forth and had a national class mentor to correct my more barbarous table tennis mistakes.

Eventually, by the time I was in my mid-50s, I began to develop legs that actually looked like legs.

Well their blade weights around 200-250g now train 6 hours a day with intense multiball and you have thousands of strokes which add up.

I think I qualify for the latter of the two statements.
