Subject: Split Core, any input?

I came across blade with split core when I got my Andro Kinetic All+ (old version, yellow handle).  It is not a 5-ply all-wood blade but 6-ply all-wood blade.  The reason is that the core (made from the same type of wood) is composed of two woods glued together, resulting into 6-ply composition.

I came across the same thing with Xiom Acro, and now with Ovtcharov Original Senso Carbon (similar to WSC, but with split core and carbon is below the top ply).

My question is, from scientific point of view, "are there any benefits of doing this?"

Will it make the blade feels better or faster or stiffer??

Thank you.

That depends on how they glue it together.  It can either stiffer or more flexible.  You just do not know.

Empirically more plies makes a blade stiffer even if it is the same kind of wood. Whether or not that is a good thing depends on whether or not you like stiff blades. I generally don't.

Generally, yes, but I have seen some very flexible 9 ply blades, so generalizations do not always work here.

My experiences with those blades are: they are not significantly stiffer (much less compared to carbon blades or 7-ply Clipper-like blades), but definitely heavier.

I am just thinking, there must be a reason why they make it that way.  What are they trying to achieve?

Sometimes there is no scientific reason. Sometimes it is just marketing. The designers are told to create something different for a new launch so they kick around some ideas, do some experiments and then voila, yet another blade. Maybe someone will like the new feel?

Not always heavier, I have an 11-ply Yasaka and its 80gms. Big smile

Worker: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...oops, my bad. What do we do now, boss?
Boss: Just sell it as a 6-ply.
